Our Bit of Dirt: June 2016
http://ourbitofdirt.blogspot.com/2016_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 19, 2016. The peas are doing fantastic - even with the chickens pecking through the fence stealing bits whenever they can! We also planted Zucchini. I don't have any gorgeous photos - only lovely dirt water wells that will soon become Zucchini. If you live in Northern Utah - Zucchini is a garden MUST. You can't grow them wrong, they grow like weeds here! I planted Cilantro in the corner of the herb garden. Hopefully this will be the perfect spot. Its full sun. Two years ago it was chickens.
Our Bit of Dirt: April 2016
http://ourbitofdirt.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 29, 2016. Who doesn't love boiled eggs? Okay don't answer that; I have met several people silly enough that they didn't like hard or soft boiled eggs! Now that my hens have settled into a normal routine of 7-9 eggs daily, I sell 1-2 dozen a week. Either that or I'm overwhelmed with eggs! Like the other day, I sold 28 eggs to a friend, 24 to another, boiled 18 and still had a full 18 left over for baking and cooking! All of them, each and everyone less than 3 weeks old! Photo 4 bottom - wait...
Our Bit of Dirt: The Garden
http://ourbitofdirt.blogspot.com/p/the-garden.html
We have four gardening areas but I generally only count three. We have the large back garden where we plant all the large veggies, corn, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, pumpkins ect. (changes every year but those are the basics). We have the large kitchen garden (shown in the photo above) and we have our grow box that I use mostly for lettuce so I can start it earlier and keep it going longer. In a good year it starts in March and goes until late October early November. Cinder blocks Kitchen Garden.
Our Bit of Dirt: Tidbits
http://ourbitofdirt.blogspot.com/p/our-dirt.html
With a little over a quarter acre, much of which is house and driveway we've managed to eek out a tiny homestead operation. I'm not an expert. We research, learn and each year grow better! Trying to make use of the space we have, I have several open areas that I have future plans for! We don't use chemicals, all fertilizers come from our compost (rabbits/chickens/scraps ect) we try to keep things as natural as possible since we have live animals on the property. Our Bit of Dirt: Jalapeno Peppers!
http://ourbitofdirt.blogspot.com/2016/09/jalapeno-peppers.html
Saturday, September 3, 2016. This recipe said it would make 6 8oz jars. It made 9 1/2 jars for me. The few drops I tasted having me drooling for Thanksgiving when I plan to serve this. If you want the store bought deep green you can add food coloring to the recipe,. I have ISSUES with America's fad for brightly colored food and avoid all dyes like the plague. What started me on Jalapeno Peppers during Cucumber season? My amazing next door neighbors brought over full box of their produce leftovers! I gard...

Nine Years and Winter in Spring. Lets start with the odd but somewhat normal Utah oddness. Winter in Spring. This year while the rest of the country was hit with blizzards, snow and frigid temperatures Utah had the most mild winter I've ever seen! 50-80 mph winds gusted through the northern valley for a good 8 hours. It was durin...

After a ton of Chicken Coop research - see my Chicken Board on Pinterest here. I realized that the pretty curtains I'd seen in other photos of coops were more than just decoration. Here are links to my favorite articles on them:. 7 Reasons to Hang Curtains. One minor pecked at egg - the inner film was still intact so it was edible.

I have been crazy busy the past few weeks. I've made a footstool, roofed the chicken coop for winter, built a fence and a feeder with the husband. Tears, Friends and Projects. Saturday morning I attended a funeral for Louis Damolaris. You may not know this about me, but I suck at lying, bright cheery words and false hope. A very good friend of mine chose to let me spend this time with her, knowing full well that I'm not the best at cheering anyone up. Sunday started off with a...

Our Bit of Dirt
Tuesday, September 13, 2016. I made a double batch, the yield was 13, 8 oz. containers. When looking up recipes there are MANY to choose from. I went with Fresh Eggs Daily's that used water and less sugar. Recipe HERE. From start to finish picking the mint, washing, drying, cooking and canning it = 6 hours. If however, you are using older mint. Mint you bought from the store, a neighbor gave you or you purchased a farmers market. I'd advise using THIS. It uses apple juice instead of water. These were ser...
