Home of the Pharaohs. A chronicle of our time in Egypt. Sunday, December 18, 2011. Our first stop was Hagia Sophia. When you stand inside the main hall of this building there is an incredible feeling of contradictions, as well as unity. Today these mosaics have been uncovered and restored resulting in a blending of Islamic and Christian ornamentation in the same house of worship. Dome above the altar. Notice the Christian Mosaic between the two large discs of Arabic calligraphy. Once the prayer had concl...

Home of the Pharaohs. A chronicle of our time in Egypt. Friday, November 4, 2011. In mid-October I went to Athens, Greece for about a week. I was attending an English teacher's workshop followed by an educational leadership conference. I'll skip the details, but it was a valuable learning experience and I came back to my school with several new ideas and approaches that will improve my practice. Graffiti like this was painted all around the city. View from hotel rooftop at night. Day Trip to Delphi.

Home of the Pharaohs. A chronicle of our time in Egypt. Friday, October 7, 2011. We couldn't get out of the car and walk around, so all of these photos were taken from the backseat. The second part of our trip today took us to a Coptic Christian holy site located just beyond the gates of Garbage City. Here there are three churches carved into the cliffside. It was interesting to see the Bible verses and images carved into the rock face with both English and Arabic writing. Posted by Meg Mosier. Helwan Ri...

Home of the Pharaohs. A chronicle of our time in Egypt. Saturday, December 15, 2012. The Virginian in Cairo. From the title of this post, you may be thinking that I am referring to myself. Oh, how wrong you would be. This past week a small band of friends piled into a few cars and wound our way up and out of Maadi to the Moquattam hills in search of the fabled Virginian Pub and Cafe. Every day is New Year's Day at the Virginian. It felt as though the white sheets had been removed seconds before we arrived.

Home of the Pharaohs. A chronicle of our time in Egypt. Saturday, May 14, 2011. Henny Penny Visits Egypt. The alarm went off at 4:00 AM today so that Seth could get an early start for a 21 mile run in the Wadi in preparation for his 78K at the end of July. He did a smashing job, and I'm sure he'll post something about the run in the near future. I'm writing to share what happened within 45 minutes of our arriving back home. As we say in Egypt, "Kollo Kwayess" [Everything's fine]. Posted by Meg Mosier.
