Following Zach and Lesley abroad in China. Zach and I haven’t been up to much lately– I’ve been feverishly grading final exams (done! And Zach’s been visiting the Nanjing University Library to finish gathering documents from their online databases before we leave to spend a few weeks in Beijing. Now that I’m done for the semester, I FINALLY had a chance to update my tumblr with a few old comics and am excited to get back to a regular schedule with my sketchbook. I love all kinds of fruits, and I always l...

Following Zach and Lesley abroad in China. A Visit From My Family. In Trips in China. This slideshow requires JavaScript. Yesterday afternoon, we concluded a wonderful two weeks with my parents, my younger brother Daniel, and Daniel’s girlfriend Heidi. I had been planning for their visit for weeks (it was the welcome distraction that got me through the insanity of grading research papers and final exams! And overall we had a great time. For lunch, we stopped at a vegetarian restaurant that offered meatle...

Following Zach and Lesley abroad in China. Last weekend, Zach and I took an afternoon trip to the Presidential Palace (now the largest museum. Zach will probably want to take another trip to the Presidential Palace to take a more careful look at some of the artifacts and descriptions, since the museum is primarily devoted to his era of expertise. For now, though, here are the pictures– enjoy! This slideshow requires JavaScript. In Trips in China. Whose mountains were also based on Chinese mountains).

Aaron's Russia Blog: Viktor Tsoi at 50
http://my-russia-blog.blogspot.com/2012/06/viktor-tsoi-at-50.html
A year in Moscow and beyond, archives and daily life. Thursday, June 21, 2012. Viktor Tsoi at 50. I saw this poster the other day in Vilnius:. And it was only seeing this memorial show advertised that I realized that today, June 21, Viktor Tsoi. Would have turned 50. I was first exposed to Tsoi in, if I recall correctly, my second semester of Russian, or nearly ten years ago. Since then, I've spent a lot of time listening and learning the words, and have not a few words, phrases, and grammar construc...

And then there is the burning question of today's Russia: "Have you paid your mobile phone bill? Friday, October 21, 2011. This Week from the Archives. Has stayed on my mind, ...

A year in Moscow and beyond, archives and daily life. Saturday, June 30, 2012. Stavropol', City of Parks, Crosses, and Archives. The train ride from Moscow to Stavropol. Was long and, thanks to the lack of air conditioning, uncomfortable. However, it went as well as can be expected, and I was lucky to have pleasant neighbors in my compartment. A year in Moscow and beyond, archives and daily life. Monday, June 18, 2012. Vilnius: Part the Fifth. Another update of what I was up to my last few days in Vilnius, and just some pictures I happened to like. If you remember back from a couple of posts. As you can tell from the pictures, the evening could not have been better, nor the sky bluer. Jessa and Doug, note the kayakers, I see an opportunity to expand! Also, they have a constitution:. I think Carrboro could learn a thing or two. Misha's Russian ...

A year in Moscow and beyond, archives and daily life. Sunday, January 22, 2012. Winter is Here; Archives. Well, it had to happen eventually, and it finally has. Winter, real Russian winter, has arrived. Today's high temperature appears to be cresting at a balmy -15 C/ 7 F. With wind and snow. I'm seeing some numbers in the forecast for later this week that begin with a "2": -25 C, yikes! I'll admit that the mild winters of North Carolina have made me soft, but this is ridiculous! In October of this year,...

Saturday, May 19, 2012. Ahh, summer. The open road.
Aaron's Russia Blog: August 2012
http://my-russia-blog.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
A year in Moscow and beyond, archives and daily life. Friday, August 03, 2012. So I fell down on the job about making a last post from Russia. Nonetheless, the trip back to Moscow was smooth, and for the most part the trip home was as easy as might be expected, given the joys of flying anywhere from any New York airport on any given rainy day. (N.b., Southwest is pretty awesome.). When I finally hit the ground in Louisville, I had an excellent welcoming committee, pictured:. Without falling asleep once!

A year in Moscow and beyond, archives and daily life. Thursday, July 26, 2012. As this Russia trip winds down its final week, I'm off to take in a new part of the country - Karelia. I took an overnight train from Moscow two nights ago to Petrozavodsk. I'm here as a guest of a friend and fellow UNC grad student, Cassandra, who just arrived here to begin some field research. The city itself is on the shores of a large lake, Onega, and there are literally tens of thousands of others in the region. The rest ...
