Coffee Mushrooms: Day 39. August 28, 2012. This morning I noticed that the fruiting bodies were mostly coming from those better-ventilated, dry patches, and that they were heading for the ventilation holes. Putting up with each other: Sugar Snap Pea Pickles | Starship X
https://starshipx.wordpress.com/2012/08/24/putting-up-with-each-other-sugar-snap-pea-pickles
Putting up with each other: Sugar Snap Pea Pickles. August 24, 2012. We were awash in peas! Not just peas, but greens, pickling cucumbers, zucchini, and broccoli. In one action-packed evening, Jen and Callista not only pickled peas, but also made indian spiced cucumber pickles. A small fraction of the copious amounts of green garden goodness appearing in our home on the daily. To combat the tide of peas threatening to consume our very souls, we hunted down this recipe. First, we sorted the peas. Beca...

Starting Mushrooms | Starship X
https://starshipx.wordpress.com/2012/07/26/starting-mushrooms
July 26, 2012. We have big dreams of raising mushrooms, but we have little experience. So our first step is to grow some oyster mushrooms on coffee grounds, using a kit. First: Get some coffee grounds. Oyster mushrooms should grow well on coffee grounds, and the grounds should be fungi-free after having boiled water forced through them. Second: Prepare a bucket. Third: Mix the mushroom spawn into the grounds. A lot of water drained out of the grounds, some immediately, more over the next few hours. To ke...

Wiggles on Collective Living, Terraforming, and Shabbiness | Starship X

Wiggles on Collective Living, Terraforming, and Shabbiness. August 26, 2012. The Starship or something like it is going into its third year as a collective in Worcester. In many ways I feel as though the first two years it has been trying to figure itself out and struggle through all sorts of meandering attentions, diverging conceptions of collectives, and such biznaz. You should always decline because ‘retreat’ is anarchist slang for ‘even longer meeting that usual.’. Green Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson.

Putting up with each other: Indian Spiced Pickles | Starship X
https://starshipx.wordpress.com/2012/08/23/putting-up-with-each-other-indian-spiced-pickles
Putting up with each other: Indian Spiced Pickles. August 23, 2012. Spices awaiting pickles at the bottom of a big jar! These Indian Spiced Pickles were part of a marathon afternoon/evening in which JB and Callista powered through a ton of pickling and preservation projects! Ish got hectic. We pickled snap peas. Froze, and blanched an impressive amount of green things. But this post is reserved for Indian Spiced Pickles. We tracked down this recipe. For Indian Spiced Pickles from Pickle Me Too. Has a ste...

Mushroom update: 1 week | Starship X
https://starshipx.wordpress.com/2012/07/27/mushroom-update-1-week
Mushroom update: 1 week. July 27, 2012. The coffee grounds mushroom spawn have now been in the bucket for one week. The big change: the surface of the grounds is covered with white fuzz. I think this is oyster mushroom mycelium. Keeping my eyes out for other fungi contaminating the grounds. Coffee Mushrooms: Day 18. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Coffee Mushrooms Day 37: Fruiting Bodies! | Starship X
https://starshipx.wordpress.com/2012/08/27/coffee-mushrooms-day-37-fruiting-bodies
Coffee Mushrooms Day 37: Fruiting Bodies! August 27, 2012. Some had given up on our bucket of rotting coffee grounds. I was almost ready to join them. Our booklet said they might take only two weeks to grow oyster mushrooms, but nothing much had changed in 5 weeks. Yesterday I dumped a whole cup of water in there, wondering if they were perhaps on the dry side. And the little fellas were happy to interpret that as a sudden rainstorm, and tonight we have the beginnings of actual mushrooms!

Diversity of bug tactics | Starship X
https://starshipx.wordpress.com/2012/07/23/diversity-of-bug-tactics
Diversity of bug tactics. July 23, 2012. We have kale in 2 raised beds. In one, it has done amazingly well. Since the beds are along our front walkway, I grab a fresh leaf to snack on every time I leave the house. In the other bed, the kale is looking pretty sad. Last night we noticed three (3) different bugs infesting a leaf of this kale, none of which we’ve seen before. Putting up with each other: Blanching beet and cauliflower greens.
