33 Bits of Entropy. Personalized coupons as a vehicle for perfect price discrimination. June 25, 2013 at 7:09 am. Given the pervasive tracking and profiling of our shopping and browsing habits, one would expect that retailers would be very good at individualized price discrimination figuring out what you or I would be willing to pay for an item using data mining, and tailoring prices accordingly. But this doesn’t seem to be happening. Why not? Which is why firms balk at overt price discrimination. 1 Coup...

Seven random things - crazy like everyone. March 16th, 2012. 07:32 pm - Seven random things. Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself. Are yummy, but should be referred to as 'scones' or 'cookies' to avoid confusion. Has never really appealed to me. Instead of paying attention in ...

Bad interpreter: No such file or directory. Posted on December 20, 2010 by Natan Yellin in Linux. Earlier today I was trying to run a Python script that I downloaded from the internet. Bash (or the kernel, to be exact) refused to run the script, insisting that python didn’t exist:. Mempy -bash: /home/natan/bin/mem.py: /usr/local/bin/python2.5 M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory. The script agreed to run indirectly with. I googled and discovered that the file was encoded in DOS format. The syste...

The Weight of Impostor Syndrome | tech ramblings

The Weight of Impostor Syndrome. April 23, 2013. Talk of impostor syndrome is almost memetic at the moment. If you don’t know what it is, go look it up. Like lots of other people, I struggle with this constantly. I’m not as smart as everybody else in the room. I’m not as good a coder. I’m not as good a manager. Sooner or later I will be found out for what I am: an impostor. But in the back of my brain, a little voice says, that was just luck. Webtools in 2012: Part 2. DXR: code search and static analysis.

Jim Gettys' ramblings on random topics, and occasional rants. Laquo; The criminal mastermind: bufferbloat! Bufferbloat and network neutrality – back to the past…. Whose house is of glasse, must not throw stones at another. In my last post. As well; as is your home router. And even your home computer. Bufferbloat is present in all of the broadband technologies, cable, DSL and FIOS alike. And bufferbloat is present in other parts in the Internet as well. This has caused me to buy new (and newer) equipment ...
