Song of Life: August 2015
http://www.thinendofwedge.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, 27 August 2015. Riu de la Fontana. Jaufre Rudel was the Prince of Blaye and a troubadour of the early12th century. It is thought he died during the Second Crusade, in or after 1147. He is noted for developing the theme of "love from afar" (amor de terra lonhdana). Much of the Trobador love poems related the pain of inaccessible love. This features in this song Riu de la fontana. Song of Life: Private practice hurts the NHS says leading cardiologist.
http://www.thinendofwedge.com/2015/05/private-practice-hurts-nhs-says-leading.html
Saturday, 9 May 2015. Private practice hurts the NHS says leading cardiologist. Private practice directly affects the quality of care that NHS patients receive and doctors should not be allowed to work on both sides of the divide, writes a senior doctor in The BMJ this week. I went private last time! Some of us looked up, wondering whether this was the solution to waiting. It was the same doctor! Is there a conflict of interest? At least some doctors think so and are prepared to say so. To begin with, he...

Song of Life: My heart is with Jeremy Corbyn, but my head is not

Wednesday, 5 August 2015. My heart is with Jeremy Corbyn, but my head is not. What should the Labour party do? Who should it choose as its next leader? Of course we should not expect the Leadership candidates to have all the answers, But we should expect them to have some ideas about how to achieve their aims. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Song of Life: Can a real Labour leader please step forward?
http://www.thinendofwedge.com/2015/08/can-real-labour-leader-please-step.html
Thursday, 13 August 2015. Can a real Labour leader please step forward? It is all so simple. You stand for the leadership of the Labour party and say what we want to hear. Student fees? Scrap them. Spending on the NHS? No problem. Social Care? Increase spending. The economy? Nationalise the energy companies. Any questions? And there is the worry. No questions. Why is the media not asking the questions it would ask if Jeremy Corbyn was leader of the Labour party? It is almost a conspiracy of silence.

Song of Life: The Conservatives brand the unemployed as 'shirkers'
http://www.thinendofwedge.com/2012/12/the-conservatives-brand-unemployed-as.html
Sunday, 16 December 2012. The Conservatives brand the unemployed as 'shirkers'. The Conservative Party has adopted an aggressive set of campaign advertisements targeted at 60 constituencies. Unemployment is a key driver of poverty. Two-thirds. Of working age adults in families where one or more of the adults are. Now the unemployed and those receiving benefits have become the government's scapegoats for the failure of their economic policies. 17 December 2012 at 12:33. 17 December 2012 at 13:01. GP incom...

Song of Life: GP income falls as costs rise
http://www.thinendofwedge.com/2013/09/gp-income-falls-as-costs-rise.html
Wednesday, 25 September 2013. GP income falls as costs rise. Have you ever wondered what your GP earns? The truth is of course that GPs compared to most of us earn a good whack. But that isn't the point. It is a high pressured, high skilled job and average GP income has been falling steadily for several years. Today's report shows that average gross earnings for contractor GPs were £267,900, a 0.5 per cent increase on 2010/11. So how is it that GP income has fallen? The answer is increasing costs. Averag...

Song of Life: RCN warns of fewer nurses, providing more care.
http://www.thinendofwedge.com/2015/05/rcn-warns-of-fewer-nurses-providing.html
Friday, 1 May 2015. RCN warns of fewer nurses, providing more care. We know now that the NHS is stretched to breaking point. The doctors and nurses tell us so. This is not an organisational issue. This is an issue of funding. With increased demands, with flat-line funding year on year for the past five, and fewer nurses, the system is creaking. This is the reality on the ground. In a pre-election report. Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the RCN said:. 8220;The cuts were so severe...

Song of Life: The disgraceful falsehood of Mr Osborne's spending review
http://www.thinendofwedge.com/2013/06/the-disgraceful-falsehood-of-mr.html
Friday, 28 June 2013. The disgraceful falsehood of Mr Osborne's spending review. Mr Osborne knows that the majority of those receiving benefits are in work. He knows also that, far from receiving something-for-nothing, most of them are receiving below subsistence wages. It is not those on benefits who have become 'welfare dependent'; it is the companies who pay such derisory wages who have become dependent on a low pay workforce subsidised by welfare. Since the financial crash the numbers of working peop...

Song of Life: What is a 'punitive' military strike against the Syrian regime?
http://www.thinendofwedge.com/2013/08/what-is-punitive-military-strike.html
Tuesday, 27 August 2013. What is a 'punitive' military strike against the Syrian regime? If it is to deter future use of chemical weapons then what kind of action would be sufficient to do so? France, the UK and the USA emphasise the importance of any action against Assad being proportionate. So far none have spelled out what this means. A punitive strike against the Syrian regime begs another question. Would we be willing to strike 'punitively' against the opposition forces should it be found that t...
