McGuire's Florida Sailing Trip. Dave and Deidra McGuire. E are back from Florida. We returned Sat after a couple very pleasant weeks, mainly around Key Largo. Wife Deidre at the helm in Florida Bay - left). We learned a lot about the boat. We started cautiously, going fairly quickly from a reefed main and working jib to a full main and genoa in 15-20 MPH steady winds (gusts to 25). I will send photos of the rig when I get my film developed this week. (see Article). Please contact the Webmaster.

The word serendipity means: an apparent aptitude for making accidental fortunate discoveries; or if you like real short one word definition; serendipity means lucky. When I first saw the Westwind that would totally occupy my waking hours for the next year I was forced to use extreme imagination to look past what I was seeing! It was hard to believe that this was a fortunate discovery. She was a complete wreck! Why would anyone look twice at such a mess? About this time Mother Nature made her little contr...

A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat: June 2014
http://py23serenity.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Sunday, 29 June 2014. On Saturday, June 28, there was a very light wind and a big blue sky, and the harbour was full of sailboats. Among them was Serenity, trying to make way with just a jib. This picture was taken by a buddy, Lloyd, aboard a 12' Petrel while I was coming over to visit. This is what Lloyd looked like when I passed him. Links to this post. Friday, 27 June 2014. On Friday morning Serenity was launched with help from Peter and Byron, and a cou...

A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Friday, 20 March 2015. Things To Do In 2015. It is that time again when I have to start planning my things-to-do list for the year. Here are a few projects. Remove all thru-hulls and install backing plates. Modify trailer to improve launching and recovery. Reseal the iron keel. Move switch panel, add the additional switches and outlets. Make dual house battery system. Install pole for antennas and solar panel. Improve mast slot cover. Add downhaul for jib.
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat: July 2014
http://py23serenity.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Wednesday, 30 July 2014. This was quite an unusual race night in that not only was there a good wind of 15 to 20 knots (force 4 to 5), but 7 boats were on the water for the race. That is the most I have seen. There were only 6 for the big Harbour Cup race in 2013. Michael (Chrysler 22) about to be passed by his father, Mark (Mirage 35). Links to this post. Sunday, 20 July 2014. A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat: September 2014
http://py23serenity.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Tuesday, 16 September 2014. I didn't spend much time with Serenity this sailing season. There were some distractions, and a lot of bad weather. There were also about 5 good weeks, including all of July, but so many things to fit in that time. Here are a few projects that did get done over the summer. The new sail cover from Michele Stevens. Coat hook on the door. Hat hook on the closet. Depth sounder in cockpit locker. Links to this post. J: 95' (2.90 m).

A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Sunday, 26 July 2015. A little experiment. While out for a relaxing harbour sail, I decided to try shooting a video with my phone. This could be the start of something. Links to this post. Sunday, 19 July 2015. It was a cool and overcast Sunday afternoon, but the winds were light. That made it a great opportunity to check the modification to the mast slot gate. Other things on the boat could be done as well, like running the reefing lines. Links to this post.
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat: August 2014
http://py23serenity.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Friday, 29 August 2014. Time to Part Ways? It has now been over 4 weeks since I have been to the Lewisporte marina. A month without so much as checking on my sailboat, let alone going out on it. The boat has only been away from the dock 4 or 5 times this year. Certainly less than 20 hours of use all season. The questions is, how much am I prepared to lose on the boat? Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Time to Part Ways? Subscribe To This Blog.
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat: April 2014
http://py23serenity.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Monday, 28 April 2014. Sailboats, after the initial investment to buy, repair, upgrade, and improve, are relatively inexpensive things to operate. By using the wind, you save a lot of money in fuel. The downside is that you don't have a motor running all the time to provide power for electronics and electrics, and keeping the batteries charged up. Those who follow Dylan Winter on his voyage around the UK in a small boat. I don't have an extra sail of approp...

A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Tuesday, 28 April 2015. Starting Ten Seasons of Serenity. May 2015 marks the ninth anniversary of my purchase of a 1977 AMF Paceship PY23. Serenity travelled from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland in May 2006. A portion of my cruising grounds. About 20NM before reaching open ocean. You can follow all of the activities from the first season here. Roxanne at Sivier Island. We had some good times aboard the boat in 2006. Serenity spent all of 2007 in my driveway.
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat: Keel Rust Repair - Take 2
http://py23serenity.blogspot.com/2015/07/keel-rust-repair-take-2.html
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Tuesday, 14 July 2015. Keel Rust Repair - Take 2. Serenity has an iron keel which can rust, and must be protected from the air and salt water. Back in 2007. I coated the keel in POR-15. Perhaps my preparation was flawed, or not enough coats were applied, but after a couple of years rust started to bubble through the antifouling. I came across a different product called Rust Bullet. The first job was to knock down the high spots with a scraper. Then, fro...
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat: November 2013
http://py23serenity.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
A Little Serenity - Life With a Small Sailboat. Sunday, 10 November 2013. Closing the 2013 Sailing Season. All good things must come to an end, as they say, including the boating season on Notre Dame Bay. It is not unheard of for us to experience a snowstorm near the end of October, but generally, we don't have to worry about winter conditions too much until December. The full moon in September shines down on Serenity. The plan this time was to attach a 2x4 with a block on top to the trailer to raise the...
