pacific thyme: January 2011
http://pacificthyme.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Separate kitchens, same passion. Sunday, January 9, 2011. One of my girlfriends loves Starbucks. She is in law school and frequently studies at the Starbucks near her house. She loves to get a chai latte and a pumpkin scone, and is upset if she arrives too late in the day and the pumpkin scones are all gone! They weren't at all hard to make, and they were DELICIOUS! Pumpkin scones from that coffee shop will never be the same. H - I hope you make these again and pack them with you when you go studying!

pacific thyme: February 2011

Separate kitchens, same passion. Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Sour Cream Sugar Cookies. I used to think that sugar cookies were only for Christmastime. I used to make them with my mom on Christmas Eve, along with a gingerbread house. We'd frost them and pour sprinkles on them, and put them out for Santa. But since reading. On how to decorate with royal icing, I've discovered that sugar cookies can be for any occasion! We made lots of icing colors and had sprinkles and just went to town decorating a ton.
pacific thyme: Cake Chronicles pt 4

Separate kitchens, same passion. Wednesday, May 29, 2013. Cake Chronicles pt 4. It's time for cake number 2 of the big baby shower weekend! First layer in the cake box, on the foiled cake board. Once I put a coat of frosting on top of the first layer, I stacked the next frozen layer on top. Two layers stacked and ready for a full frosting coat. I actually ended up using ALL of the green frosting for the first coat, and had to make a new batch for the grass. I couldn't believe how big this cake was! I als...
pacific thyme: Cake Chroncles pt 3

Separate kitchens, same passion. Wednesday, May 29, 2013. Cake Chroncles pt 3. This past weekend was showtime for two of the three large cake projects. On Friday, I did the assembly of the western cake. I had planned to assemble both the western and the dinosaur cake, but I got a little caked-out and decided it would be ok to push the dinosaur cake assembly to Saturday morning before I left for Clovis. To start the western cake assembly, I made a big batch of swiss meringue buttercream. I colored about 4...

Thursday, September 19, 2013. My office recently started up a book club, which is awesome, even if that means I'm somehow in three book clubs. (Oops.) We're currently reading Wolf Hall. Which is about Thomas Cromwell. So far, I'm not a huge fan of the writing style- historical fiction in present tense is a bit silly- but, I'll withhold further judgment until I have finished the book. So I am privy* to the many ways in which gas can go terribly wrong. That says to me that, at least historically, our socie...

Monday, October 7, 2013. Alan brilliantly suggested baking cookies this weekend. When he asked what my favorite cookies are, I immediately responded, "Snickerdoodles! So, when Alan and I decided that we were going to make snickerdoodles, I immediate texted my mom to ask for the recipe, because no other would do! We were entertained that my iPhone wanted to autocorrect to "snicker doodles," which we imagined to be excessive chortling while drawing. I was pleased with how our snickerdoodles turned out, jus...

To my later explorations of his Christian writings such as Mere Christianity. And The Screwtape Letters. I also loved this quote:. I was rather surprised that one of t...

Thursday, January 2, 2014. Why I'm Going Pescetarian. I could have continued in this "flexitarian" state, but I decided that I wanted to commit to something more specific. There are a number of reasons why someone might choose to reduce or eliminate their consumption of animal products, but these are the reasons that most motivate me:. Humane Treatment of Animals. A number of the people in my life whom I most love and respect are vegetarian. I want to join their ranks. I'm choosing to continue to eat sea...

Always looking to the sky. He made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south. Job 9:9. Thursday, November 26, 2009. This thanksgiving, I am so very thankful. This is going to be a bit trite, and possibly vague, but here we go:. I am thankful for my recent trip to London to visit Heather. I am thankful for her friendship. On that note, I am thankful for all of my friends. They are amazing. I am thankful for now being home with my family and my bear. Labels: thanks to you.

Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Confession: until recently, I had no idea how to stir-fry. You'd think it be simple, what with the primary instructions being right there in the name, but I had no idea what to do. My family never make it growing up, so I had no experience making it. I'm fairly adventurous in my cooking as an adult, but somehow stir-fry never made it into my repertoire. Veggies that Alan and I receive every two weeks. I can't get it crispy! What are your favorite things to stir-fry together?

Thursday, March 6, 2014. To Love God and Neighbor. Let us remember Paul VI’s words: “For the Catholic Church, no one is a stranger, no one is excluded, no one is far away” (Homily for the closing of the Second Vatican Council, 8 December 1965). Indeed, we are a single human family that is journeying on toward unity, making the most of solidarity and dialogue among peoples in the multiplicity of differences. Links to this post. Tuesday, February 4, 2014. I'm concerned about the California drought. I want to do my part to help with conservation, so I started researching ways to cut back on my water usage. Apparently, 50% of residential water use occurs outdoors, so I'm already way below average on that front, what with my lack of yard. Nonetheless, there are some. That urban dwellers can do:. Turning the faucet off while brushing teeth or shaving saves about 10 gallons a day. Our property manager did toilet leak tests yesterday,...

Monday, 15 March 2010. I saw an interesting patient recently who presented to a medical ward with tiredness and an inability to walk. The case made me think firstly about unusual presentations of disorders and secondly the problem of inadequately trained staff doing assessments outside their field of expertise. The patient was in her 40's and had had a gastric bypass operation. And the treatment injections of thiamine after blood tests for vitamin B1. I wouldn't expect the nurses to diagnose Wernicke's b...
