Tuesday, March 10, 2009. Students are also being introduced to the Shopbot with this project. Many teams opted to cut out their trebuchet wheels with the machine. The following video shows the Shopbot cutting wheels from scrap plywood. The wood is simply hot-glued to the table. The exhaust was turned off during this operation so I could talk. Wednesday, April 15, 2009. The students had two days to test fire and modify their trebuchets. Each machine needed to make 5 official shots. Weight, speed and distance were recorded after each shot. The students will use the data to calculate average distance, average speed, Kinetic Energy of the tennis ball, potential energy of the trebuchet, and efficiency of the trebuchet. Friday, March 27, 2009. The Tech Club, Mr. Duzan, and I are currently building a verticle wind turbine. Yesterday, we were finally able to make some progress on it. First, the wing ribs were drawn in AutoCAD. They were then imported into our Shopbot design software, Partworks. We used Partworks to create the toolpaths that the Shopbot can understand. Thursday, February 5, 2009. A very big "Thank You! To Al Winterle and the folks at Chicago Cylinder. For their support of our program. They very generously donated 20 pneumatic cylinders and mounting hardware. These cylinders will be put to good use in our Intro to Engineering class, where students are charged with designing and constructing an automated can crusher. The crushers are fed with a robotic arm and the pheumatics are operated through relays and solenoid valves.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009. The shopbot is up and running. The connections are made and the testing is complete. We have a working CNC machine! Below is a short video of a small plaque being V-carved. The Oak is simply hot glued down. I found that the hot glue peels right up and I don't have to worry about the bit hitting a screw. The students will soon be designing and building their can crushers. They will use the Shopbot to cut out their support pieces. Check back for more pictures and videos.
