This pack features something a bit different - we’ve focused on the sound of the BM-3, a vintage piezoelectric microphone that features a lush distinctive tone. Warm and slightly crackly, we played some plucked bass notes and suspended guitar chords on an old Les Paul. The result is soft and drifty, with just a hint of bite from the bass. Yep, this pack is a sonic study of 70 year old Hermes Baby typewriter, a famous model produced by E Paillard and Company from the late 1930s on, and reportedly used by Hemingway. We’ve prodded and coaxed it to produce a variety of sounds with an unexpected physicality. When recorded, the sounds have a strength and depth that defies the archetypal clickety-clack noise we often associate with the machine. This week’s pack is taken from “Taxi and Atsha Jives,” a classic example of township jive from South Africa, full of scratchy guitars, fat and funky bass and searing horns overdriven to the point of distortion. We were lucky enough to pick up our copy of this LP for 20 cents a few years back (thanks, Launceston). We’ve applied a little bit of de-crackling and some compression where needed, but kept the bright, gritty feel intact. Ldquo;Taxi and Atsha Jives” LP.

To fatten them up and add a bit of tone, we’ve used our patented Icaro Dubstation™ setup - a small-run Australian mixer from the 1970s, branded as “CBA” - Custom Broadcast Amplifiers. Totally transistor-based, and made on the cheap, this mixer distorts beautifully. While its EQ is not very useful when used as intended, it really helps to push and drive the distortion in different ways. Ldquo;CBA” mixer. Eventide BD955 delay unit.

This pack is made up of sounds from two electronic kids’ instruments - an Optimus “Concertmate” keyboard, used for beats, and melodic elements from a worn-out Lamaze ‘chime garden’ musical toy.
