Posted by Bernard Marks. On May 31, 2014 in Introduction. Introduction to Painting the Mindscape. Welcome to my new blog! Painting the Mindscape is a guide to meaning in art. It is intended primarily for artists, but lovers of art may find it interesting and helpful, too. Its aim is to give artists ideas about how to create art with meaning, as well as feeling. Over time, I’ll share my thoughts about art and life and the thoughts of those whom I respect as people, artists and thinkers. If you’re a painte...
Think Small - Painting the Mindscape
http://paintingthemindscape.com/think-small
Posted by Bernard Marks. On Feb 15, 2015 in Aesthetics. Painting is only a bridge. Linking the painter’s mind with that of the viewer. In my recent work, I have tried to pay attention to those small things that make paintings come to life. It may be the way sunlight hits the surface of water, or the little variations that convey a perception of 3-dimensions. This is the illusion painters try to create on a 2-dimensional surface. Look closely. The beautiful may be small. Immanuel Kant, philosopher. Bernar...

Patterns in the Mindscape. Posted by Bernard Marks. On Nov 2, 2014 in Aesthetics. Patterns in the Mindscape. With an eye to the future, I took several painting workshops during my business career. In one of them, the instructor brought reproductions of famous paintings and asked us to configure the value pattern of each painting by doing a tonal analysis of the composition in a black & white drawing. It was a useful exercise. If you would like to see my initial value sketch, use the CONTACT feature on my...
The Prose and Poetry of Art - Painting the Mindscape
http://paintingthemindscape.com/prose-poetry-art
The Prose and Poetry of Art. Posted by Bernard Marks. On Jan 10, 2015 in Aesthetics. The Prose and Poetry of Art. How does an artist elevate a work from prose to poetry, and who is to judge whether a painting reaches that goal? In my opinion, the answer is in how the work affects the viewer, whether it strikes an emotional chord, or stays in the memory. The degree in which a poet’s imagination dominates reality is, in the end, the exact measure of his importance and dignity. George Santayana, Philosopher.

Before I became a full-time painter, I spent many years as an entrepreneur. Since I’m not a stranger to risk, I know that it is essential to the creative process. When you put aside self-imposed limitations, you learn to think in new ways and begin to trust your instincts. Be bolder and more interpretive with color. All growth is a l...
