Chronicles of Oksnernia: Home Alone?
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2014/07/home-alone.html
Friday, July 18, 2014. When will I be allowed to stay home alone? My 9 year-old recently asked. Maybe next year, when you're 10," I replied, thinking of me making a quick jaunt to drop brother off at a nearby friend's house. But then I'd be scared! So obviously you wouldn't be ready," I replied. "When you don't feel scared at the thought, you'll be ready.". Who knew that *I* should be the one scared of this scenario - and of losing custody of my child? According to an article in The Atlantic. Im coming h...

Chronicles of Oksnernia: Happy Freaking New Year
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2015/01/happy-freaking-new-year.html
Friday, January 2, 2015. Happy Freaking New Year. Anxiety is an ugly thing and I fight my demons daily. New Year's Eve is a perfect example. I head into the new year feeling cautiously optimistic. The optimistic part lends itself to planning adventures, thinking about new beginnings, and launching self-improvement ideals (exercise, diet, career path, you name it). The cautious part begins as a tiny knot in my tummy. The worry of "what if? The unknown that will happen. What if someone gets very sick?

Chronicles of Oksnernia: Mama Amiss
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2014/10/mama-amiss.html
Thursday, October 9, 2014. Today is October 9. Seven years ago today, Sean came into the world. Each year, on each boy's birthday, I write a loving ode to that year of their life. I missed Jayden's 9th birthday letter. I have always been so anal retentive. About making sure the date stamp on the birthday letter entries are the boys' exact birthdates. So I guess I better get writing for Sean. And figure out how to backdate a letter for Jayden. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to our world!

Chronicles of Oksnernia: June 2014
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 9, 2014. A few years ago, I won a silent auction item - one free piano lesson - at the kids' school carnival. I thought perhaps someday I could entice the boys to learn to play the piano. Fast-forward to this year, and Nana noted that we have a perfectly good piano (the one Dave learned to play on, in fact) gathering dust in our living room. I asked Jayden if he wanted to play and got an unequivocal NO. I hesitantly asked Sean the same question, thinking perhaps he was too young. It is motiv...

Chronicles of Oksnernia: July 2015
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 26, 2015. The Truth Hurts. A Lot. Tonight, officially, the magic ends in Oksnernia. One small reason to have children, is to be able to enter the world of magic and imagination and innocence - to see the wide-eyed wonder as your child discovers that presents appear somehow in the night each December, and that a tooth magically becomes money under one's pillow. I've never had Santa Claus, but boy was I looking forward to being the Tooth Fairy. But once again, Jayden surprised me. Rather than ...

Chronicles of Oksnernia: February 2014
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 22, 2014. I attended a Bar Mitzvah ceremony today. [For those not in the know: the Bar/Bat Mitzvah - or "Son/Daughter of the Commandments" - ceremony marks the coming of age of a 13 year-old in Judaism). It's been too long since I've been to a regular run of good old fashioned B'nai Mitzvahs. As a child growing up in Southern California - with the second largest Jewish population in the country - you can bet that my 13th year meant every single Saturday morning was spent in shul. Today...

Chronicles of Oksnernia: March 2015
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Here I am, on the other "side of the hill" as they say, 40 years old and ten days. I don't feel a day older than 40! It may help that the ol' hubby whisked me away for two nights to Paso Robles. In order to splurge on a room with a jacuzzi tub. Because you gotta have the in-room jacuzzi tub. Thanks again for the free sitter services, Mom, Dad and Nana! Yes, it takes three grandparents to wrangle my two children. Because I am just that good. At raising them.]. The getaway was much...

Chronicles of Oksnernia: Lizzie Caplan Wannabe
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2014/07/lizzie-caplan-wannabe.html
Tuesday, July 8, 2014. There is a "controversy" brewing over on my Facebook page:. Do I really, in fact, look like actress Lizzy Caplan from the Showtime series, "Masters of Sex"? She is seven years younger, so there's that flattering aspect of the question. She appears by all accounts to be a nice Jewish girl from Southern California (check, check). But then there's that whole question of whether or not I could pass for an actress playing such a role. Yeah, methinks not. Not yet, anyway.

Chronicles of Oksnernia: October 2013
http://oksnerfamily.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Sunday, October 20, 2013. There, I said it. According to the Hospice counselor who came to our synagogue, we need to use concrete language: "he died." "Sammy is dead." When we use flowery euphemisms - like "passed away" or "passed on," it softens what shouldn't be softened. On October 20, 2013, at 6:31 am, he exhaled his last breath. He was 8 years, 6 months, 2 weeks, 4 days, and 6 hours old, his mother said. And she should know. But none of that matters. And when those moments evaporate. My Aspie asked,...
