Newer posts →. Assignment 5: Grids and boxes. Comments Off on Assignment 5: Grids and boxes. To start with, played around with some basic box shapes. Thinking about the tools:. Thinking about grid systems and proportionality. The ubiquity of the rectangle, and the biology of the eye… did a bit of reading round looking at grids based on the golden section (for proportionality). I picked out one grid design to try out for the report A4 spread and A4 single page:. A4 grid tryout 1. A4 grid tryout 2. This is...

Assignment 5: feedback and review. I’ve finished the course (ages ago) and I’ve pulled together the stuff for assessment and sent it off. Have I learnt anything? Looking back at my reasons for doing the course:. I have absolutely no formal design training, so would like to do this course to help with this. I’ld quite like to do a structured course, and explore the subject a bit. I’m also interested in looking at the idea of design that ‘doesn’t look designed. This entry was posted in Log. Janet's OCA Photography Blog: May 2010
http://janetsocaphotographyblog.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Janet's OCA Photography Blog. Photography 1: People and Place. Thursday, 13 May 2010. Ex 6: Best of a sequence. After about 10 minutes I decided to try fill-in flash, as I was concerned about the dull conditions and didn’t have a reflector. The on-camera flash had the desired effect of adding light in her eyes but was a bit too harsh for portraiture. I think a flashgun would be a sound investment. So the rapport between the two must influence the resulting images. My biggest mistake was not using fill-in...

Janet's OCA Photography Blog. Photography 1: People and Place. Tuesday, 19 April 2011. Ex 22: Adjusting the balance between person and space. Mr Jamieson very kindly came out of retirement (once again) as my model for this exercise. The pictures were taken last week during an unscheduled stop-over in Brugge. As such the pictures were taken with my Lumix compact camera on Program mode. By moving David close to the camera in this final shot he dominates the frame so becomes the main point of focus. The...

Janet's OCA Photography Blog. Photography 1: People and Place. Sunday, 14 November 2010. ASSIGNMENT 3: BUILDINGS IN USE update. Have made my final selection for this assignment. From the list of buildings I originally researched I have narrowed my choice to:. GOMA, The Briggait, The Botanic Gardens, Glasgow Climbing Centre and Glasgow School of Art. I decided to add my workplace, James Watt College as it is a very modern structure which compliments my other choices quite nicely. Wednesday, 3 November 2010.

Janet's OCA Photography Blog. Photography 1: People and Place. Sunday, 9 October 2011. 10 Ways to Take Stunning Portraits. Isn't it always the way - having finally completed the People and Place course, I find a brilliant article by Darren Rowse about portraiture on the website Digital Photography School. Http:/ www.digital-photography-school.com/10-ways-to-take-stunning-portraits. Photo by Mrs Maze. Striking use of limited colour, space, strong shapes and unusual framing. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Janet's OCA Photography Blog. Photography 1: People and Place. Saturday, 10 September 2011. Reflecting on the People and Place course. Well that's my first module with the OCA completed and all that remains is to send my work away for the November assessment. It's been a long, interesting and enlightening journey — one of many highs and lows, triumphs and failures. I spent a huge amount of time researching and photographing at many locations in Glasgow for Assignments 3 and 4. Street photography and ...

Janet's OCA Photography Blog. Photography 1: People and Place. Sunday, 27 February 2011. ASSIGNMENT 5: Update. Commuter photoshoot. Not much progress on this assignment over the winter apart from taking shots at the cyclo-cross races in December and January. Then a few weeks ago Susan Walker contacted me to say she wanted the new brochure ready for the Scottish Bike Show on April 16/17th. This means the whole project must be completed and ready for the printers by the end of March. Yikes! In the afternoo...

Janet's OCA Photography Blog. Photography 1: People and Place. Monday, 27 September 2010. ASSIGNMENT 4: A SENSE OF PLACE: Update. Five weeks into term and I haven't had much free time to work on the assignments but with a clear sky and full moon at the weekend I ventured back to try and shoot the BBC Scotland building again with better equipment. This was the first time I had attempted night-time urban photography with my SLR and a tripod. We are so lucky in Glasgow to have such photogenic landmarks with...

Janet's OCA Photography Blog. Photography 1: People and Place. Monday, 15 August 2011. Ex 10: Moment and gesture. Most photographers quickly become aware of Henri Cartier-Bresson and the idea of the 'decisive moment' but it is only when you yourself try to capture it, do you realise how difficult and elusive that moment can prove to be and therefore what a genius Bresson was. Rue Mouffetard, 1954. I love the expression – the boy looks as pleased as punch carrying his bottles. A controlled photoshoot with...
