Saturday, April 28, 2007. I was inspired to write a Sudoku solver in Haskell to solve the Sudoku-related task on Project Euler. The concept behind this solver is that the puzzle is represented by a collection of constraints, and the solver transforms these constraints until the puzzle is solved. This approach works for many, but not all, Sudoku puzzles. At least it's fast! First off: I'll be needing a few libraries to help out. Import Data.List hiding (group). Import Text.ParserCombinators.Parsec. A Sudo...

FS: HTML Scraping with TagSoup

http://panicsonic.blogspot.com/2008/02/html-scraping-with-tagsoup.html

Sunday, February 10, 2008. HTML Scraping with TagSoup. Earlier today I wanted to know the packages on Hackage. Which stated a dependency on Parsec. So I wrote a command-line utility to do it. This post presents the utility. The plan is simple: grab. Http:/ hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/pkg-list.html. Extract all of the links which look like links to packages, and then for each of the package-description pages find out if the dependency list includes parsec. If it does, print the package name.

Saturday, April 18, 2009. Earlier today I decided to unearth an old project of mine - figuring that the best way to learn two languages was to implement one in the other, I wrote a MUMPS. I was learning MUMPS for work, and Haskell for fun. Back when I wrote it, I used readline. In the REPL part of the interpreter - during the cleanup I wanted to move away from readline as GHC. Doesn't ship with it any more, and sometimes it can be a pain to install on its own. So I switched to Haskeline. So I wrote a sma...

I'm not sure where the yellow-circle around the bulb comes from. I find it distracting. Venician Fort sunset - HDR Remix II. Originally uploaded by stoicviking. I finally found a picture on flickr done with fattal02 tone-mapping that I like. The trademark halo is still there, but I love what the operator did to the sun through the clouds. Sunday, February 15, 2009. MaybeT - The CPS Version. I think I finally understand writing code into continuation passing style. I've understood it at an academic level for some time - but that's different from being able to write the code. This post presents a different implementation of the Maybe monad transformer - usually presented as so:. Data MaybeT m a = MaybeT {runMaybeT : m (Maybe a)}. Which can be used to add the notion of short-circuiting failure to any other monad (sortof a simpler version of.

The View From Now: An Announcement

http://theviewfromnow.blogspot.com/2010/09/announcement.html

Sep 4, 2010. Here is the deal. For a long time, I have been cross-posting entries between here and LiveJournal. LiveJournal has been making a bunch of changes lately that I think breach its users' privacy and trust. So LiveJournal will no longer be my main journal. My home-base journal will now be at Dreamwidth: http:/ laceblade.dreamwidth.org. Unfortunately, Dreamwidth cannot yet cross-post to the Blogger platform. If Dreamwidth does one day allow cross-posting to Blogger, I will look into it. Most of t...

The View From Now: A Review and Some Commentary

http://theviewfromnow.blogspot.com/2010/05/review-and-some-commentary.html

May 23, 2010. A Review and Some Commentary. When I first saw advertisements for this series, I was afraid that it would be a little moe, but was glad to find that this was not the case. Has a nice review in the second half of this post. Complete with a couple of pictures. With the closing of DC Comics' CMX line (which mostly translated/distributed shoujo comics in the U.S.), there have been many intense blog posts. To think that I would drop $8-14 on a single volume (usually readable in one 2-hour sittin...

Jun 1, 2010. WisCon 34 Panel Write-Up: Rated E for Everyone? Increasing Diversity in Games and Gaming. Again, it's not an exact transcript because I do pen/paper notes. Panelists: Chris Hill, Robyn Fleming, Jacquelyn Gill, Nonie B. Rider, Anastasia Marie Salter. The sub-culture of "gaming" is very broad, so the panel began by establishing different interests. CH: Role-played in the late 70s and early 1980s, and is now into computer gaming. AS: Just finished a PhD in (? Gaming narratives (sorry, I wasn't ...

http://theviewfromnow.blogspot.com/2004/11/my-purpose-for-writing-and-your.html

Nov 17, 2004. My Purpose for Writing and Your Purpose for Reading. This post is the result of conversations I have had with two people. Firstly, what is my purpose in having a blog? I had a blog before any of you whores did. When I first made a blog, it was because I was a member of the messageboard called WOFS (Watch Out For Snakes! I read Kell's blog. And I thought it was really cool. So I decided, "hey, blogs are cool, I want one! The deeper question is, after three years, why am I still blogging?

May 31, 2010. WisCon 34: Demands and Links. If you attended WisCon 34, please visit WisCon's website and fill out the surveys. As a member of the ConCom, I can tell you that all responses are read and considered when planning for next year. The View From Now: Rage

http://theviewfromnow.blogspot.com/2010/06/rage.html

Jun 4, 2010. Elsewhere on the Internet, in a post that is unfortunately locked, various things have been purported. I am sick to death of motherfuckers telling me that entire aspects of my identity do not exist because of the labels they ascribe to me. Because I am Catholic, there is no way that I could hate my bishop, want women to be priests, or be adamantly supportive of the separation of church and state. Because I am a 24-year-old woman, I must want to get married as soon as possible. In the end, I ...
