Book Reviews and Other Musings. Judging a book by its cover. The problem is though, that because I love the look and feel of books, I fall into the old trap of judging them by their covers. A big literary no-no, right? Seth Grahame-Smith: whatever comes next has a lot to live up to in the cover art stakes. Megan Abbott: I love these - perfectly capturing the genre. Philip Pullman: attention to detail. Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies series: cheerful. 1970s editions of Agatha Christie: sinister .

Book Reviews and Other Musings. 2011 has been a strange year, filled with ups and downs and everything in between. I didn’t achieve so much writing wise and certainly failed to keep Paperback City up to date. That said, the last few weeks have seen some serious progress on the second draft of my novel, with much scribbling out and rewriting, and one or two ‘did I write that? I’m looking forward to 2012. In particular, I can’t wait for Adelaide Writers’ Week (Megan Abbott, yay! 8211; John Darnton. The Bri...

Book Reviews and Other Musings. Summer holidays mean one thing: summer holiday reading. I always like to balance the busy Christmas season with a good dose of easy reading knowing I'm likely to be distracted, interrupted, and not at my brainy best. With this in mind, John Darnton's Neanderthal. A scientific thirller in the vein of Michael Crichton, promised to be just what the doctor ordered. And I was constantly picturing missing Kellicut as Sean Connery playing Dr Jones Senior). Matt and Susan made...

Book Reviews and Other Musings. Book Review: The Full Cupboard of Life. The Full Cupboard of Life (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency #5) – Alexander McCall Smith (2003). I have always had a soft spot for crime fiction but sometimes find the endless murder, torture and autopsies a bit overwhelming. That sort of gore doesn’t always do much for one’s mood. Enter Alexander McCall Smith and his No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. Has the same light hearted vibe of Christie, laced with understated humour and warmth.

Book Reviews and Other Musings. This week I voted in a favourite books poll run by the Sydney Story Factory. In conjunction with the Sydney Morning Herald. Artists will be designing new covers for a book of their choosing from the top 50 and these will be sold at auction with proceeds going to the Sydney Story Factory. Keep an eye on their website for results and get behind this excellent initiative. Paulina Simmons’ The Bronze Horseman. And Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend. The Hobbit - JRR Tolkein. Black...

If someone came up to you and earnestly told you that the acting in a movie didn’t matter you’d probably laugh in their face. After all it’s not the cinematographers and editors who get payed the big bucks in Hollywood it’s the stars. Movies are made or broken by the ability of actors to bring us into the drama. And yet:. But What Kind of Art? This brings me to my point.

I sit 8 inches closer to the screen. I use a keyboard (because I am an idiot). I chew my bottom lip. I do trigonometry and calculus at the speed of light. I spend half the time on autopilot. I savor the squishy wet slap of my run. I get sick of ‘Princess in Another Castle’ jokes. I stay up till 4:00 AM. I get sick of all the retro-fetish.

Videogames, Excess, and the Palace of Wisdom. Archive for December, 2009. On December 18, 2009. Now days when I catch the train I see more people playing videogames than reading books. There are yuppies tapping away at iPhones, young boys catching them all on their DSs and punk rock grrls with purple hair and PSPs. Certainly a lot of the games they’re playing are trashy time wasters but then most of the people I see reading are not exactly boning up on the classics either. That figure is an actually an.

The two mediums that appear to have the most trouble convincing the general public of their artistic merit are probably videogames and ironically Fine Art. Show most people The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living. Right let’s begin. A picture says a thousand words and often they tell a story. Videogames, Excess, and the Palace of Wisdom. Archive for January, 2010. GOTY 2009 – Canabalt. On January 28, 2010 8 Comments. In a slighty disappointing year for games, where few in the mainstream barely even bothered trying to push the goal lines, there were not many games that can be called hip. Canabalt is hipper than a cat wearing shutter shades. Screw realism with a steak knife, Canabalt looks better than the real world. Do graphics matter? Read Full Post ». Why Do People Hate The GOTYs?
