Walking around Guayaquil, Ecuador. Since our rooms were not ready at 6AM, we had breakfast and went on an early morning walk around town. We walked towards Malecon 2000 - the beautifully reconstructed boardwalk. It was pretty overcast all morning but I think that was good for our walk as the humidity already made our walk much more difficult than it would be otherwise. Day 5 - last full day. This morning we went fishing again. The piranhas in Rio Negro are different from the ones on Rio Solimoes. There are no red ones here but there are the black ones which are the largest type, up to 5kg. Roberto, our resident fishing expert, caught two of these black piranhas. Day on Jaco Beach. Today was dedicated to relaxation (well after our surf lesson that is). We spent the whole day at our resort - Hotel Club del Mar in Jaco. We had a 2 bedroom apartment with full kitchen which allowed us to cook some food for breakfast. After that it was all relaxation for the rest of the day. Links to this post. Again, I'm impressed by the free wifi in both the Edinburgh and Dublin airports. I can only hope I don't have to go through immigration and customs again in the US but somehow I'm skeptical. I have arrived in the US. No further immigration or customs. Very nice. Reflections on the Amazon Clipper Cruises and the Amazon. This was really an awesome trip. Boating down the amazon is an incredibly serene and scenic experience. The views are magnificent and the sounds of the jungle are great, especially at night. There weren't too many mammal sightings bit we did see many colorful birds. Weekend near San Francisco. The tour lasted about 2.5 hours. A volunteer of the reserve led the tour and told us all about otters, sea lions,the island offshore and its history as a lighthouse but now is inhabited by the sea lions, the stories of rescue and conservation of the elephant seals, and of course about the elephant seals and their mating and molting seasons. On our final evening at the lake house, we took a boat ride at dusk. The water was so calm and the views were beautiful as we watched the sun set. I also discovered a glasswork studio. That had glass blowing lessons and took a 1hr lesson. I made 2 pieces - a drinking glass and a paperweight. It was lots of fun. I can't wait to try it again. Links to this post.
