Un Appartement à Montmartre: The Shoah Memorial
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012/04/shoah-memorial.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Shoah" is a Hebrew word meaning calamity or catastrophe and the Shoah Memorial is dedicated to the memory of all the Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis. Today we visited the Shoah. Walls with the names of 76,000 French. Deportees who were killed during WWII. A room of files adjacent to this crypt area holds the original index cards created by the French Vichy Government when these people were first interned. The same files are still used to...

Un Appartement à Montmartre: The Romantic Life Museum and Lavinia
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012/04/romantic-life-museum-and-lavinia.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Sunday, April 8, 2012. The Romantic Life Museum and Lavinia. The museum is housed in a building that was a favorite meeting place for romantic artists like Franz Liszt and the famous lovers - Frederic Chopin and George Sand, the female novelist; in fact, Chopin and Sand lived here together for many years. Aurore Dupin (alias George Sand), had taken a man's name in order to become published. We actually found Fauchon overrated and overpriced, although we got some cerise noir (...

Un Appartement à Montmartre: Parc Monceau and Musee de Nissim Camondo

Un Appartement à Montmartre. Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Parc Monceau and Musee de Nissim Camondo. Since we have been so fortunate with this unseasonably warm weather, we decided to take a stroll through one of Paris's prettiest parks: Parc Monceau. We entered this very romantic park through fancy, gilded wrought iron gates and were immediately surprised to see so many Parisians hanging out there on a work day. Seems like everybody has spring fever! And this pretty little bridge:. The museum is located in ...

Un Appartement à Montmartre: Uniquely Paris
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012/04/uniquely-paris.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Wednesday, April 25, 2012. This will be our last blog entry for our month-long trip to Paris, so we are going to use it as a catch-all for some of the things that make this city unique. When Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann designed the Grand Boulevards of Paris for Napoleon III, he created some interesting architectural challenges that resulted in these intriguing skinny buildings with a footprint that was often not rectangular, but wedge-shaped:. On the streets of Paris.

Un Appartement à Montmartre: Cooking at the Ritz
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012/04/cooking-at-ritz.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Monday, April 23, 2012. Cooking at the Ritz. Ready to get started! Just experiencing the labyrinth cooking world beneath the famous Ritz Hotel was a humbling part of the whole experience of taking a class here. This is where students are taught the secrets of fine French cuisine by chefs wearing the tall white toques (the higher the hat, the more experienced the chef). We added a pinch of salt at the very end (so that it would not dry out the meat). Chef Jerome became fru...

Un Appartement à Montmartre: WWI: The Forgotten World War
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012/04/wwi-forgotten-world-war.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Sunday, April 15, 2012. WWI: The Forgotten World War. In 1918, WWI came to an end when Germany surrendered in these isolated woods inside a railroad car on the 11th of November. The terms of the surrender were quite harsh and humiliating for the Germans (and often blamed for bringing on WWII). The French even took the rail car into Paris to show off where the armistice was signed. The small museum displays a rail car just like the original:. Of course, Hitler seems to find hi...

Un Appartement à Montmartre: Chateau de Vincennes
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012/04/chateau-de-vincennes.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Wednesday, April 11, 2012. One of the most amazing things about Chateau de Vincennes is how unvisited it is despite the fact that it is just an easy Metro ride from anywhere in Paris. In fact, when you climb the stairs at the end of Metro Line #1, the main tower of this medieval castle is right in front of you. There is almost no work to do to see this fabulous sight! It almost feels as if you have arrived in Disneyland, but this is the real deal! My Favorite Books about Paris.

Un Appartement à Montmartre: The Architecture Museum and the Liberation of Paris
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012/04/architecture-museum-and-liberation-of.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Monday, April 9, 2012. The Architecture Museum and the Liberation of Paris. We walked behind the museum for one of the best views of the Eiffel Tower. No matter how many times we see it, La Tour Eiffel still gives us goosebumps (or at least it gives Anne goosebumps! Our main goal for today was a "Paris Walks" tour on the Occupation and Liberation of Paris. We love these walking tours that make history come alive as you pass places where actual historical events happened.

Un Appartement à Montmartre: February 2012
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Thursday, February 16, 2012. As most of you know, Anne is a true Francophile so we are celebrating her 60th with a trip to Paris. We have rented an apartment in Montmartre (south of Sacre Coeur), and the plan is to live like Parisians (not that we will fool anyone! Staying in one place will be a real novelty for us, but not to worry, Anne has done her research and unearthed more than enough to keep us busy! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Un Appartement à Montmartre: Les Jours des Chocolats
http://supsictravelsfrance.blogspot.com/2012/04/les-jours-des-chocolats.html
Un Appartement à Montmartre. Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Les Jours des Chocolats. I think we have a problem. Seriously. Is there such a thing as "Chocoholics Anonymous? We are definitely going to need a support group when we get back home - the chocolates here in Paris are simply the best anywhere. And maybe the most expensive too! So, bottom line, if you down that whole chocolate bar that you've been chomping on, and still crave more, you were NOT eating the good stuff! Cocoa beans grow on trees in a fairl...
