Saturday, June 28, 2008. How Big is Big: The Blue Whale. The The Blue Whale (balaenoptera musculus) is generally considered the largest animal that ever lived. It can reach lengths of over 110 feet long and weights of over 200 tons. The throat of the Blue whale is pleated so it can expand like an accordion when he takes in water. The image above shows his throat about half expanded. For a long time, scientists thought the whales throat was always partially expanded because they only time anyone g...The M...

Tuesday, June 28, 2011. HBO fires off what may prove to be a new battle for your hearts and minds over the issue of tort reform, with the film Hot Coffee. Besides your basic legal and human rights, there are a few issues to consider whenever discussing the issue of Torts and the fight over them. Thirdly: The right initially fought this issue by using anecdotes like the McDonald's Coffee suit, which the film explodes, but proceeds to argue the case for the left using new anecdotes of their own. Just l...

Thursday, October 30, 2008. I was never a big fan of the program they have over at Belhaven. Mixing evangelism and academics never made much sense to me. I always thought learning should be free of any preconceptions, be they religious or social or political so that you could follow the path wherever it took you. Being successful or popular doesn't mean it's the right path though. Sometimes the safer path doesn't travel nearly as far or as high as the one with more risks. Links to this post. A parade is ...

Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Sympathy for the Jews and Arabs. I've always had some sympathy for the Palestinian Arabs. After World War I, Europeans had good news and bad news for the Palestinians. The good news was that we freed them from the oppressive Ottoman Empire. The Bad news was that the Jews were returning by the million. That would never happen, of course. Unlike the Jews, displaced Native Americans didn't flourish in foreign countries to return centuries later, much stronger than when they left.

Wednesday, April 29, 2009. I Hate College Sports. It's not just the corruption, or the vast scale of the corruption, or how invasive and pervasive, or even how everybody knows just how corrupt it is but still lets it happen, That's not why i hate college sports. I hate college sports because everybody lets it happen because they just want their team to win. They're afraid if they do it right, if they do it the way it's supposed to be, they won't be able to compete and win. I don't think you can repair co...

Sunday, May 31, 2009. What if Ron Paul Ran America. Although soundly rejected in his presidential bid, people keep talking about Ron Paul. It got me to thinking about what life today might be like if Ron Paul were in charge for the last one hundred years. Lacking adequate health care or housing without medicare, medicaid, welfare, food stamps, ADC and other programs, the poor and the elderly would live in squalor and there would be few opportunities for people to move upwardly from one class to another&#...

Tuesday, December 30, 2008. How Not To Write A Headline. On www.money.cnn.com, the headline reads: Worst Holiday Shopping Season Since '70. Now, to read just the headline, you would think CNN is saying that retailers sold about as much in 2008 as they did thirty-eight years ago in 1970, which would have been an unmitigated disaster. In terms of actual dollars, retailers actually sold over three times as much in 2008 as they did in 1970. This doesn't seem to be the case over at CNN.com. You can read the a...

Saturday, April 30, 2011. Resolving Urban Decay With Better Laws. One of the biggest reasons we have urban decay is the simple fact that it's usually more profitable for developers to start with undeveloped land than to renovate or re-purpose existing structures. We could level the playing field by using the tax code. The result would yield huge economic, ecological and sociological benefits. There already are some elements of this in the tax code, but more is needed. Sunday, April 24, 2011. I always tho...

Boyd's Life: August 2008

Saturday, August 23, 2008. Is this how mothers should act? I should probably shut-up about this, but those gentle-folk over at MADD piss me off so I'm writing about it, again. Back in elementary school, we all learned there were two ways to pass a law. The first was by representation: we elect a guy by democratic means and he goes to a thing called a "congress" where they vote by democratic means and make laws. Pretty straight forward, there's no problem there. You win or lose! Fair is Fair, Right? Unabl...
