Program Otonomi has its origins in the Water Bearer Program. An initiative of Volunteer Gilles Raymond to bring drinking water to the villages of Flores, where women used to walk over two hours a day through mountain trails in order to fill their plastic jugs. Local autonomy being a prerequisite for the development of local communities, Program Otonomi has set up a ginger and coffee plantation. Operated, controlled and managed by the Ngada Peasants Cooperative. Let him tell us about his projects!

Without water, there is no life, no agriculture, no development, no autonomy. Walking up and down the mountains for water is not only counter productive, it is exhausting. Since 2001, the Water Bearer has been implementing drinking water systems in the villages of Flores. Breaking up with that image of Third World adults and kids collecting garbage in open dumps, Coop Bank Sampah has set up a waste collecting and recycling plant in cooperation with the Government of Flores, Caritas Belgium.

Within your means a loan for dignity. Starting a plantation means borrowing to buy land, providing guarantees, mortgaging your goods. Finding $2 200 to buy land is not an easy task when you earn only $800 per year and decide to lift yourself out of poverty without begging. After one year only, 21 hectares are currently being cultivated by 21 peasant families, thanks to the Loans for Dignity made by Partners for Development. A relationship based on reciprocity and equality.

Une initiative du Coopérant Gilles Raymond visant à amener l’eau potable dans les villages de Flores, où les femmes devaient auparavant marcher plus de deux heures en montagne pour remplir leurs bidons de plastique. L’eau n’étant qu’un premier pas dans la conquête de l’autonomie, le Program Otonomi a mis sur pied une plantation de gingembre et de café. Opérée, gérée et contrôlée par la Coopérative de paysans Ngada.
