PCMCD-Control Efforts

The PCMCD reduces mosquito populations in various ways, including water management, biological control agents, and insecticides, which can be effective in controlling mosquito larvae (larvicides) or mosquito adults (adulticides). Mosquito populations can increase rapidly depending on flooding and general weather conditions so a constant check must be maintained to determine which species are infesting a particular area to assure that control is carried out to the best advantage. PCMCD-Disease Monitoring

Another responsibility of the PCMCD is to monitor the presence of arboviruses, viruses which are transmitted by mosquitoes. The viruses we currently test for are Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis and West Nile Virus. Every week during the mosquito season, PCMCD staff draw blood from chickens located in cages distributed throughout the county.

The Pasco County Mosquito Control District has an Aquatic Weed Control Program. We do not control weeds for beautification purposes. We only attempt to control plants that harbor certain mosquito species, or to thin out areas such as floating plant mats where growth is so thick that natural predators (e.g. minnows) can't find the mosquito larvae and pupae. The mission of the Pasco Mosquito Control District is to protect the health and well-being of the citizens of Pasco County through the prevention and control of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases. Our goal is to control both pestiferous and disease carrying mosquito populations to a tolerable level in the safest, most economical manner, while using a variety of methods in such a way as to minimize potential effects on people, wildlife and the environment.
