The passionate bookworm

Sunday, 22 January 2017. Fantasy classical pre-Greek Sci-fi. Yes it sounds pretty wacky, but it's a way of writing about an ideal society, as envisaged by Plato in The Republic. I started by reading the sequel, Philosopher Kings, and am now reading the first one, The Just City, by Jo Walton. Another twist is that the Gods Apollo and Athene are also there, incognito. A good and thoughtful read. Sunday, 4 September 2016. We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves - Karen Joy Fowler. Thursday, 27 August 2015.

Friday, 18 December 2009. Psychic Siamese cats and men with big moustaches. Man-hungry PR ladies in the Cotswolds. Victorian Egyptologists pursued by ghosts. Welcome to the world of comic detectives! 1 Lilian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who. series. 2 Agatha Raisin and. by MC Beaton. 3 Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody -the Victorian Egyptologist sleuth. Similar to the TV version of 'Lark Rise to Candleford' for British viewers. Community spirit is very much alive in these stories -often remote communities wh...

The passionate bookworm: Katharine McMahon's favourite books

http://passionatebookworm.blogspot.com/2010/04/katharine-mcmahons-favourite-books.html

Friday, 16 April 2010. Katharine McMahon's favourite books. Anyway, Katharine McMahon is guest editor this month, and has chosen her favourite books. I think 'Stuck in a Book'. Will like these too! I'm reading 'The Road Home' by Rose Tremain right now and enjoying it, though it is a bit close to home as I have some Polish friends - while their story is different, the 'no jobs' situation is the same as the hero of this book. Let's hope Poland does have jobs from joining the EEC. Stuck in a Book. Hi Simon ...

The passionate bookworm: Self-improvement bookpile

http://passionatebookworm.blogspot.com/2012/01/self-improvement-bookpile.html

Saturday, 14 January 2012. This is my bookpile in the kitchen. It doesn't have any fiction in it - which is what I mainly read. That pile is in the sitting room and is mostly library books. This pile has reference books in it - poetry, art, self-help - and is mostly half-finished books. Maybe my project for 2012/13 is to finish off the half-done ones! See 'Stuck in a Book' and other book blogs for other 2012 book project ideas. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Cornflower books blog and book group.

Declutter and recycle day by day: October 2011

http://declutterrecycle.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Declutter and recycle day by day. Friday, 28 October 2011. Photos and a hatbox. Today I finished going through the photos in one of the boxes under the bed - entertaining, and I've thrown out enough to squeeze the rest of the non-digital photos in the box. I'm going to scan some to surprise old friends and family with. I also gave a pretty hatbox away that I have been keeping because it looks useful to keep things in. and hasn't been! The recipient is using it to pack things in on a flight, so good.

Declutter and recycle day by day: September 2011

http://declutterrecycle.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Declutter and recycle day by day. Tuesday, 20 September 2011. Daily maintenance and not being perfect. Or we procrastinate and have huge boring 'to-do' files. I also threw out a guidebook I'll never read again to a church that's only open once a year. It would be better to give it back, but never mind - I'm not going to remember in a year's time to go back! Decluttering tip - you are not perfect! Be selective about what you put your energy into. Declutter and recycle day by day: Letting go of childhood memories - stamps

http://declutterrecycle.blogspot.com/2012/09/letting-go-of-childhood-memories-stamps.html

Declutter and recycle day by day. Sunday, 16 September 2012. Letting go of childhood memories - stamps. I have just given away my old stamp collection and my sister's, to a young teenage girl who is just starting her collection, via 'Freegle' (in the UK part of Freecycle converted to Freegle). We (my sister and I) still have my father's collection, which we want to sell, however I hope this has cleared the way to do that as well. It was great to find someone who actually wanted these things! View my comp...

Declutter and recycle day by day: I'm still going, just not blogging about it..

http://declutterrecycle.blogspot.com/2012/05/im-still-going-just-not-blogging-about.html

Declutter and recycle day by day. Tuesday, 1 May 2012. I'm still going, just not blogging about it. I have been decluttering and sorting things without blogging - I spend too much time pottering on the computer as it is. Always find time to read '365 less things' though. Shows how creativity, however little, is less easy than passive reading! I didn't intend to buy first editions however after some research I conclude they must be. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Declutter and recycle day by day: July 2012

http://declutterrecycle.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Declutter and recycle day by day. Sunday, 15 July 2012. I saw this photo on Facebook - I couldn't find the source but it seems apt to include here. Thursday, 12 July 2012. I've not posted for awhile, and maybe that's partly because I feel like a cluttery sort of person and not the sort of person who should write about decluttering as I could be a fraud. The more I get rid of things, the more I realise how much clutter I have! I've just read people's entries to a little test on '365 Less Things',. I'm 57,...

Declutter and recycle day by day: February 2012

http://declutterrecycle.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Declutter and recycle day by day. Friday, 24 February 2012. Saving £350 by decluttering. Has anyone else had this happen to them? What I'm grateful for:. A local market with fresh fish and bread, and the local butcher's with a friendly welcoming serving woman. Friday, 17 February 2012. The makeup and travel drawer. I've just cleaned and cleared out my odd things drawer in my bedroom and discovered I had:. 10 mascaras (for someone who only wears makeup now on special occasions this is unnecessary! I also ...

Declutter and recycle day by day: Decluttering, change and happiness

http://declutterrecycle.blogspot.com/2013/01/its-ages-since-i-have-blogged-about.html

Declutter and recycle day by day. Wednesday, 30 January 2013. Decluttering, change and happiness. My cat doesn't mind clutter! I'm still reading '365 Less Things'. Which keeps me going, and I've discovered the Happiness Project blog. Through 365 - which has relevant hints and is interesting in itself. One key to happiness, according to its author, is 'an atmosphere of growth'. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 365 Less Things - a good decluttering blog. My sister's beautiful Chilterns B&B.

Declutter and recycle day by day: One thing leads to another..

http://declutterrecycle.blogspot.com/2013/02/one-thing-leads-to-another.html

Declutter and recycle day by day. Saturday, 16 February 2013. One thing leads to another. I have created another benefit from decluttering. I was getting rid of some boxes in my sitting room - one of envelopes and the other of old versions of a cookery book. I wrote years ago for medical charity Action for ME. Now have 11 sales (much frantic packaging and spreadsheeting) and 6 more yeses, so have sold all but one, which I shall keep 'just in case' (of what I do not know - may declutter later! 365 Less Th...
