The Pastor's Heartbeat

Wednesday, March 16, 2016. I don't remember ever caring about the desert. My few trips were hasty ones, passing through as if the desert terrain was merely to be endured until reaching our final destination- the mountains, the ocean, etc. Nor the great restaurants we ate at (don't miss Banderas in Scottsdale), but the beauty and the majesty of the desert. Someone once remarked to me, "You have to be really old and bored to enjoy the desert! Peaking through the desert maze like beacons of bright light.

The Pastor's Heartbeat: February 2014

http://pastordalebarrett.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 20, 2014. I recently completed Calvin Miller's book, THE VANISHING EVANGELICAL. Miller died before the book was published and it was his last salvo directed at a church he grieved as being in its death throes. The book is not light reading. Miller seems a lot caustic in his criticism of the mega church movement and what he calls the emergence of " jumbotron". Here's how I was affected by what I read. 1 I attend a church of about 1000-1200 pastored by my stepson. The church is growi...

Thursday, December 19, 2013. Building my faith.no reason to worry. When I wrote a couple of weeks ago I talked about the challenge of building my support team for our ministry in Haiti, and how much I have dreaded the task. Last year the theme Bev and I adopted was "W alk by faith. And it has been was exciting to see how God had made those words literally come to life for us. He has presented challenges for us to face and resources with which to face them. But I am making progress, thanks be to God!

The Pastor's Heartbeat: October 2013

Tuesday, October 22, 2013. The Ministry of Prayer". My mother will be ninety next year.a hard fact to digest. I never think of her as old and her mind remains as sharp as ever. I recently was telling her how significant her contribution was to my life- and literally hundreds of others- through her faithfulness in prayer. I write a short simple poem about this to her on Sunday afternoon after a long conversation we shared together. The Ministry of Prayer. From a grateful son to a praying mother). But, gen...

The Pastor's Heartbeat: November 2013

Thursday, November 07, 2013. Teaching.an inescapable joy. On Sunday morning I preached twice at Grace Church in San Luis Obispo for my stepson, Tim, who was traveling in India. I had forgotten how much I loved teaching the Word since it had been ten months since I had actually stood before a congregation to teach the Word, apart from my ministry in Haiti back in May. We are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works that he planned in advance for us to do.". What give you inescapable joy?

The Pastor's Heartbeat: February 2015

http://pastordalebarrett.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 23, 2015. Once a pastor, always a pastor. I recently decided to take a break from FB because I discovered I was slowly slipping into pastoral mode every time I read of a friend's need or heard a cry for help. I realized that though I had retired from active full-time pastoral ministry over eighteen months ago, I actually was "back in the saddle". Having recently "celebrated" my sixty-seventh birthday, I have been rehashing these last months and asking if I am still feeling significant.

Full-lifeCoaching, Dale Barrett. Musings from a pastor and counselor about life's daily struggles and "stuff". Wednesday, July 8, 2015. How to spot a true disciple of Jesus. Jesus is sharing what is commonly called the "Upper Room Discourse" in this portion of John 13-17 and He introduces what I believe to be a neglected truth with his disciples in John 13:34,35. 1 This is NOT a new. Full-lifeCoaching, Dale Barrett. Musings from a pastor and counselor about life's daily struggles and "stuff". Thursday, July 10, 2014. Summer is a 'mystical" time on the Central Coast. You have heard of "June gloom"? That's not how it usually is the trajectory of where the highway peaks almost always reveals sunshine on the other side. At 1:30 pm in between counseling clients, I drove to Avila Beach from my office and spent one glorious hour in beautiful sunshine walking on the beach. The fog and sunshi...

Full-lifeCoaching, Dale Barrett. Musings from a pastor and counselor about life's daily struggles and "stuff". Thursday, April 24, 2014. How can we process issues that are of importance that are often difficult to resolve? Left unaddressed they potentially can lead to anger, alienation and anxiety in our relationships. God's Word helps us with this simple admonition in Proverbs 12:18, "Reckless words pierce like a sword but the tongue of the wise brings healing". And " selfish ambition". And then say "gr...

A Conundrum: How can one be wasting away and being renewed at the same time? I know it's a long title but it summarizes a question I've had for a long time. I observed the answer. Full-lifeCoaching, Dale Barrett. Musings from a pastor and counselor about life's daily struggles and "stuff". Tuesday, June 24, 2014. The truth about the IRS. The title is meant to be an enigma. An oxymoron. Who can know the truth about the IRS? The questions posed by the convened House and Ways Committee seem appropriate. What is the truth? Where is the truth hidden? Why has the truth mysteriously disappeared? Is it coincidental that the truth we asked for has now been destroyed? Yes, I am a mostly-con...

Pastor David Dahl's Mission Trip -- 2006

Pastor David Dahl's Mission Trip - 2006. Monday, May 01, 2006. We went to the ELCB church in English this morning. This church was full of people from Tanzania doctors, business people and other executives. Other than the preacher for the day who was a female pastor from the Church of Finland, who had been on an assignment at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Ramotswa, we were the only whites in the church. The children were led out to a really jumpy tune in Setswana. I was moved with feeling in respe...

Tuesday, June 2, 2015. God Speaks Through Birds 2. It reminded me of the scripture in Hebrews that reminds us there is a great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us as we live our life of faith. Heaven is cheering you on and hoping and encouraging you on until the race is over. (Hebrews 12:1) God is on your side! He is fighting for you and not against you! God wants you to succeed and not fail in your journey of faith! God knows you and likes you! Monday, May 18, 2015. God Speaks Through Birds. God has us...
