Thinking Outloud

Tuesday, August 8, 2017. The Liberating Ignorance of Knowledge. Two things I have come to believe over the years: First, when we know little, we think (and act! Like we know a lot. Secondly, when we know a lot, we recognize how little we know and learn to live without all the answers. In short, true knowledge leads to ignorance. To put it another way, too many people don't know enough to know what they don't know. It is a tragic place to be. So if there is a point to this rambling it is this: Be humble a...

Thinking Outloud: February 2011

http://pastordaveccc.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 11, 2011. Atticus Finch: A Man's Man. Recently I've been reading To Kill A Mockingbird. The book has moved me in countless ways. In particular, it has spoken to me about what it means to be a father and a man. This is related to. So what am I after here? To begin, I believe we need to let our children be children. Let them explore again. Give them more freedom. Let them play without adult supervision and let them solve their own problems. The world is safer- at least wher...It's time for...

Thinking Outloud: April 2015

http://pastordaveccc.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Random Thoughts About the Church. I've recently finished a book that confirmed so many of my own thoughts on the church. It's entitled, Shrink: Faithful Ministry in a Church-Growth Culture. By Tim Suttle. I'll list some of the main ideas the book has reestablished in my heart. The church is not called to grow nor to shrink but to be the church. Making growth your goal can be toxic. Success-driven churches can easily lose a relational focus. Pragmatism is an idol in the church.

Thinking Outloud: January 2011

http://pastordaveccc.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 13, 2011. Recently I've been reading a biography of Jonathan Edwards by George Mardsen. The book is beautifully written, detailing the life and times of Mr. Edwards as well as his theology. For those of you who don't know, Jonathan Edwards is often considered to be America's greatest theologian. He was a reformed minister, instrumental- both by his preaching and writing- in leading one of America's greatest revivals in the 18th century. Edward's words in italics). By no means. Rathe...

Thinking Outloud: June 2014

Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Leisure Time and The End For Which We're Created. How strange, then, to the modern ear that Aristotle answer his own question, 'What ought we to do when at leisure? With the response: 'Clearly we ought not to be amusing ourselves, for then amusement would be the end of life.' For Aristotle, we only know how to spend our leisure time if we know what our lives are for and the end to which our lives are to be directed." (Dunnington,. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Thinking Outloud: December 2010

http://pastordaveccc.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 2, 2010. For this last post on giving I will return to another favorite text of mine- 2 Corinthians 8. Paul does something remarkable in this section of scripture by making an intimate (direct? Connection between grace and giving. Can you imagine it? When's the last time you've heard of Christians begging to participate in an offering. Most of the time, Christians resent any mention of a need in church. But these Macedonians, though lacking in wealth and comfort, wanted.

Steiny's Corner: Thy Kingdom Come

http://steinyscorner.blogspot.com/2013/10/thy-kingdom-come.html

Of late, my thoughts have been occupied by the Lords prayer and the coming of the kingdom of God. This has largely been due to N.T. Wright and Scot McKnight. They have challenged how I view and interact with the world around me. I’ve recognized in my own life two perverse views that have distorted what it means to seek, pray, and usher in the kingdom of God. If God loves the world and all that are that in it (John 3:16)…shouldn’t we? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). My brother's blog (David).

Steiny's Corner: Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold

http://steinyscorner.blogspot.com/2013/07/revenge-is-dish-best-served-cold.html

Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold. 8220;Revenge is a dish best served cold.” Old Klingon Proverb. In talking about justice this morning, I found myself at odds. I don’t like justice…I like revenge. So there’s two questions I had to ask myself. 1) What is the difference between justice and revenge? 2) Why do I like revenge more than justice? Which brings me back full circle to revenge vs. justice. I want revenge, a form of justice, only because it quickly feeds my impatience and returns things to...Aweso...

Steiny's Corner: Eugene Peterson's 5 Rules for Small Groups

http://steinyscorner.blogspot.com/2013/08/eugene-petersons-5-rules-for-small.html

Eugene Peterson's 5 Rules for Small Groups. Start and stop at an agreed-upon time. Even if the discussion is going great, stop when you said you would. There will be another session. Late-night bull sessions are for people who don’t have to go to work the next day. Take the group seriously. Give it high priority. Refuse to let anything but illness keep you from it. Sporadic attendance weakens the group. Since each person is part of the content, the group won’t function well without you. These are simple ...

Steiny's Corner: Come and See!

http://steinyscorner.blogspot.com/2012/12/come-and-see.html

And Nathaniel said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth? 8221; Philip (Nathaniel’s brother) said to him, “Come and see." - John 1:46. I read this scripture in my devotional time this morning…and it just floored me. There are several things that I walked away with, that caused me to reflect on the whole of scripture and it’s relation to our lives today. 8220;Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, but and eat! This one little verse caused me to ask my...

Steiny's Corner: The Day God Died.

http://steinyscorner.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-day-god-died.html

The Day God Died. If you didn’t know it, today, well at least about 2,000 years ago today, is the anniversary of the day that God was put on trial, convicted and killed. Here’s a snapshot of the trial. As with any trial, we have the prosecution representing the people, the defendant and the judge. The prosecution starts by listing God’s crimes…. 8221; The response came confident, restrained and yet meek, “You have not asked a question, you yourself have said so.”. The courtroom erupts. A small contin...

THE SHEPHERD FOR EVERYONE

Thoughts on Scripture and life, from a small church pastor. Exploring what it means, that everyone needs the Good Shepherd. Monday, February 19, 2018. GET CLOSE TO JESUS! 22 Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and unable to speak was brought to him. He healed him, so that the man could both speak and see. 23 All the crowds were astounded and said, “Could this be the Son of David? This was the turning point miracle for many. They could not ignore what the people had seen. But it’s a whole &#821...

The Blog of Pastor Dave Sonnenberg. Wednesday, September 29, 2010. How would you introduce him? My wife is very good at introducing people to each other. I have often met the same people 2 or 3 times but. . .she sets a good example in that she wants people to know each other. How would you introduce someone to Jesus- to someone who knew nothing about him? What would your simple introduction be? Would you tell another about something Jesus did or said? September 29, 2010. Ramblings of a Youth Pastor. The thoughts, ramblings, and insights of a middle aged youth pastor. Tuesday, January 30, 2007. It's hard to believe that January is almost gone. Time flies! The Spiritual Adventure weekend went very well. We had over 100 students and youth leaders show up. The seminar leaders did an excellent job. The waterpark was fun, too!
