Drawing plays a central role in my work and while realism has never been my goal, preoccupation with the face has been a constant theme. Abstraction, caricature, contrast and isolation all stimulate a virtual reality and more recently grouping has started to emerge. Drawing for me is necessary and fast, a counter balance to the slow art of weaving.

Japanese ink drawing - the basis for my next tapestry. Starting from a tonal drawing and working through to a coloured tapestry is for me is a complicated process and I am apt to get sidetracked, seduced and occasionally confused. So I have developed a strategy:. I select a tonal range that I sense will work in the tapestry, reflecting the mood of the drawing. With this information, I can weave so much more freely, particularly if as in this case I am looking for an overall harmony tweaked with surprises.
