Sustainable Batik: wax temperature
http://sustainablebatik.blogspot.com/2009/03/wax-temperature.html
Musings, investigations and research into creating a sustainable batik practice. Monday, 9 March 2009. Not very scientifically controlled, nevertheless I have been measuring the temperature of wax in my Tixor Malam waxpot. Usually I have had it at its highest setting (7). I can only speculate the temperatures above setting 4 as the thermometer stopped just beyond 110C. So approximately, 5 - 116-120C, 6 - 126-130C, 7 - 136-140C (240.8-248F, 258.8-266F, 276.8-284F). It says a Tixor Malam heats only to 135C.

Sustainable Batik: October 2008
http://sustainablebatik.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Musings, investigations and research into creating a sustainable batik practice. Wednesday, 15 October 2008. Frugality (blog action day - poverty). Frugality does not mean poverty or deprivation. It means the wise use of resources.". Paul Hawken in 'The 11th Hour'. For full quote, see NPQ. Rather than write about poverty, the theme of this year's Blog Action Day. Which devises and/or introduces very simple technologies to lift struggling communities out of dependency or poverty. My dream is to find a sim...

We got back to civilization to find that everyone had conspired in our abscence to make life much more comfortable, sleep much more easy, and food much more invigorating than it ever was before. That was nice of them.

Sustainable Batik: November 2008
http://sustainablebatik.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Musings, investigations and research into creating a sustainable batik practice. Thursday, 27 November 2008. Art, environment, politics. A few weeks ago I gave a slide-talk to a lovely art group in St Agnes (mid Cornwall) about my batik and inspiration. Hopefully they were inspired enough for a workshop next year! Two years later in Shropshire I was astounded, dismayed, aghast. British environmental groups were only just gearing up for the Antarctica campaign here! In late 1987 I arrived in New Zealand a...

Please don't move your studio to somewhere without a view! Of it is depressing, imagine how depressing it would be to actually have to work in such a space.is it possible it might even deter you from working at all? Make a list of your 'cannot live without' requirements and don't compromise on those! Right, I'll shut up now.

Sustainable Batik: August 2008
http://sustainablebatik.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Musings, investigations and research into creating a sustainable batik practice. Sunday, 31 August 2008. Straight and curly, and thin green lines. These photos were taken on August 2 (4 weeks ago) as I'd noticed a variation in the woad plants. Some plants had straight edged leaves, others were wavy. Helen (growing most of my woad) has also noticed this. I wonder if it's a genetic mutation, or a natural variation. Posted by Robin Paris. Links to this post. Labels: dyes - woad and indigo. Sustainable Batik: June 2008
http://sustainablebatik.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Musings, investigations and research into creating a sustainable batik practice. Tuesday, 24 June 2008. Procion dye shelf life. Procion MX one year shelf life? Who started this myth? I wasn't convinced by the depth of the test's black either, but serious-black always has been an issue with Procions. To sum up, three dyes opened 18 months ago (at time of purchase) have lasted longer than one opened within the last year (also bought 18 months ago). Another dye just opened (purchased in last year? For sure ...
