IndianCrk: Module IX Tales of Drunken Trees, Methane Bombs & Glacier Blues
http://indiancrkghetto.blogspot.com/2010/12/module-ix-tales-of-drunken-trees.html
Saturday, December 18, 2010. Module IX Tales of Drunken Trees, Methane Bombs and Glacier Blues. Viewing the TD videos allowed me to gather valuable information on the module’s topic this week. I found them to be full of great photography and content for students to see first hand. The thawing of ice-rich permafrost causes subsidence of the land surface, creating thermokarst ponds and causing trees to tilt, which is shown in this peatland terrain in Churchill, Manitoba. Sunday, December 12, 2010. Talk about going out with a bang! This module was chock full of information, and I thought it was the best. For some reason I am particularly captivated by all of the information regarding glaciers, seasonal ice and permafrost. I kept finding out new interesting tidbits and calling to my husband in the other room, "Hey, did you know that . . ? I think he knows more about ice now than he really cared to know. I might have some new thoughts on it after taking this class. It is ve...

Sunday, November 28, 2010. Essential Question: How is Earth's climate connected to its geological, biological, and cultural systems? To address this question we first need to be able to define climate. This is not as easy as it seems. There is so much information that is needed to understand Earth's climate and the change in it. What new learning or reflections have you taken from this module? One of the most interesting things that I learned about in this module was the role of Cyanobacteria. That I thi...

Sunday, October 31, 2010. Danger in Our Backyard: Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis! Explain What new learning have you taken from this module? In this module I have learned about the creation story of Hawaii and the controversy surrounding the astronomy site in Hawaii. These were both things that I previously did not know about. We used Google Earth several times in this module and I think that I can know say I feel comfortable with it and would now feel comfortable using it in my classroom. It could ...

Explore 907: November 2010
http://explore907.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 24, 2010. Something else from this module that intrigued me was the information about the big bang. I had no idea that we could detect remnant microwaves from this event. The fact that we have this piece of visible evidence for something that happened so long ago is pretty amazing. I was curious to learn what other cultures might believe about how the universe was created, so I looked up some creation stories. Painting of P'an Ku from Google Images. Soon I plan on also using the video...

Exploring Alaska with Kenai Kathy. Sunday, October 31, 2010. Cataclysmic Events (and Happy Halloween). Cute pumpkin carving video. How do these events help inform students? They are a great “hook” as everyone loves a great catastrophe or adventure – look at how popular disaster movies are! Most students have heard of great floods, earthquakes, and volcanoes and it is something that can really get their attention. We have a Magic Planet projector. What did I learn this week. Is a really awesome place to v...
