This blog chronicles the adventures of the Ocean River Competitive Outrigger Team as they compete at the 40th annual Queen Lili'uokalani race being held Sept 3-5, 2011 in Kona, Hawaii. Friday, September 2, 2011. This morning the team met the Kamehameha Canoe Club. Oahu and the Kahana Canoe Club. Maui to help them rig the three boats they were loaning to our women's teams. The rigging process took about four hours in the heat of mid morning on the Kona pier. Boat rigging using tradition rope methods.

Sunday, September 4, 2011. The six mile double hull races started this morning with the teams needing to rigg their double hull canoes at the last moment before the race. Luckily we were able to enlist Nappy Napoleon, probably the most famous outrigger paddler on the planet, to help us quickly rope rigg the double hulls.

Outrigger paddling attracts a variety of people from different backgrounds. Our paddlers range in age from 16 to 70 and come to the boat with all levels of paddling skills and fitness levels. Welcome to Ocean River Outrigger. VIEW OUR HAWAII GALLERY. Located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, we are Ocean River Paddling Club’s competitive outrigger program. A group of over fifty paddlers, ranging in age from 18 to 65, you can see us paddling Victoria’s inner harbour 3 to 4 times a week. Each year, our team chooses an international goal race to train for and compete. This year 30 of our members will be headed to Kona, Hawaii to compete in the 40th Annual Queen Lili’oukalani Race.
