Patrick Kana Designer Maker. Designer and maker of hand-crafted custom furniture. Bends, Twists, and Curves. It’s been a while since updating–school is totally consuming all of us, but I have a quick break while monitoring the 3D Design shop so here goes:. After creating three separate forms, just for the back structure of the chair, I was able to scribe the true curve of the twisted lamination onto a drawing to give me the shape of the next form. Here you can see where the first one blew out and where the structure was lacking. The remaining strong structure was then filled in with a new seat. A new seat was constructed, then after about 2 minutes of sitting, the curved pieces failed. Truly shows how a structure’s strength must be balanced.

The mockup was created first to dial in the seating proportions, then models, full scale sketches, and 1/4 scale technical drawings were done. The early models were hot pipe bent in basswood while the final model was walnut, pipe bent, then laminated and shaped. The final model included all the same joinery as the final chair will.
