Save the East Tower. The Mission was named to the prestigious World Monuments Fund (WMF) 2016 World Monuments Watch. Since its founding in 1978, Patronato has raised more than $11 million for the restoration and preservation of Mission San Xavier. The White Dove Campaign begun in 2013 continues, as does fundraising through spring and Christmas concerts. The restoration of the Sacristy Arcade. The White Dove Campaign. Widely regarded as the premier example of Spanish Colonial architecture, San Xavier del Bac is the only church of its kind within the U.S. that is largely intact in its original form. During the more than 200-year history of the Mission, non-compatible materials were used at times in repairs. Save the East Tower. History of The Mission. MISSION SAN XAVIER DEL BAC was founded in 1692 by a Jesuit missionary, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. It was then that he became the first non-Indian to visit the village of Wa:k, or Bac, as he wrote it, and it was he who bestowed the patronage of San Francisco Xavier on this large village of O’odham or, as he called the natives, Sobaipuris.
