patternsinsight - Washington Monument (Baltimore)
http://patternsinsight.com/post/105995340297/washington-monument-baltimore
A new way of looking at the world we live in. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I missed the lighting of the Washington Monument. In the Mt. Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore. Since it was quite dark, my camera couldn’t take a picture worth anything without being rested on something. I managed to leverage railings and items from pockets to get a reasonable shot at 3200 ISO, but quickly realized that long exposures were going to have some serious potential. Looking to the next week, I’ll be stayi...
patternsinsight - Contractions
http://patternsinsight.com/post/107351427091/contractions
A new way of looking at the world we live in. The other day I was riding the shuttle to another building for a meeting when I noticed a pretty obtrusive sign on the window next to me. It read “don’t open” on one line, and “nicht öffnen” on the next, written in a bubbly font and all lowercase, that made me take it less seriously (which is probably not what was intended). Other than the immediate question of, “why did they choose German for the second language? Next post →. Larr; Previous post.
patternsinsight - Cherry Blossoms

A new way of looking at the world we live in. A few weeks ago, I attended the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC with some friends. I had vaguely participated last year in that I was on the DC polo fields. Observing the D-I Men’s Colonial Conference Championships. I was mostly annoyed at how difficult it was to get around last year, and this year, I was a part of the problem. Next post →. Larr; Previous post.
patternsinsight - Dumplings for Pi Day
http://patternsinsight.com/post/113993684566/dumplings-for-pi-day
A new way of looking at the world we live in. Dumplings for Pi Day. I finally had a chance to use the Nikon again this past weekend! I went to a “dumpling party” on Saturday, fully embracing that dumplings were basically tiny pies. As soon as I arrived, I was put to work by the hostess, who was a real task-master, getting us to create the dumplings as quickly as possible (without sacrificing quality, of course). Many of the dumplings were far from perfect in shape, but they still met the most basic requi...
patternsinsight - Wall of Text
http://patternsinsight.com/post/105388934116/wall-of-text
A new way of looking at the world we live in. So I’ve been blogging every week for almost a full year now, and one thing you may have noticed is that I always have a picture included in the blog post. I feel somehow compelled to include that picture because for whatever reason I find it necessary for it to break up the text that otherwise would be a wall of white and gray in front of you. Of course there’s also the other reason why I include images most of the time: because I am normally talking ab...

Patterns in Randomness
A blog about gaming, fiction, and human nature. Sunday, August 16, 2015. I have seen plenty of comments saying they liked the first but not the second BioShock. After having played both, I cannot see why. There are small changes to many things but mostly BioShock 2. Follows the same paths as the previous one. I do not understand what would make it worse. Saturday, August 15, 2015. Had I known how similar to System Shock 2. Monday, August 10, 2015. Moving to the fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons.

A new way of looking at the world we live in. Further Adventures in Home Repair. Anyone that has been to my house knows the trials and tribulations of the “purple bathroom,” as it is located on the main floor of my house, and has caused many annoyances over the years. I first tried replacing th flapper, but that didn’t help, so I figured it was likely the gasket between the tank and the bowl. I was tempted to just get a new gasket (and maybe new bolts too while I was at it), but I decided that ...After g...
