Joy in the Middle. Finding joy in the mid-life, empty nest years. Saturday, December 31, 2016. Happy New Year, my friends. I hope you all had a lovely, joy-filled Christmas and that this final day of 2016 finds you happy and healthy and excited to welcome in another new year. While I have missed all of you, the break has been good for me, and it is with a refreshed heart and a renewed commitment to using my time well that I return to Joy in the Middle. On this frigidly cold New Year's Eve. Thank you so m...

Only a few short weeks ago, I reported that my son had put an offer on a house and that it had been accepted. Well, this past Monday, he closed on it! I'm so happy for Garrett, and so proud of him too. He is a responsible, hard-working man, and that has paid off- -2 months shy of his 25th birthday he is a homeowner! This week's questi...

Love Affair with the Classics | Joy in the Middle

Joy in the Middle. Finding joy in the mid-life, empty nest years. Love Affair with the Classics. Sunday, November 6, 2016. I ran downstairs, and just as I got to the bottom of the stairs, I heard another unmistakable voice- -that of Audrey Hepburn. Roman Holiday. The film which began my love affair with the classics- -was on TV, so I settled in to watch. Though I don't talk about it here at Joy in the Middle. With actors I had barely even heard of? What was she thinking? Has shown me that. Thank you so m...

A Million Skies: Disappointment and Expectations Go Hand in Hand
http://www.a-million-skies.com/2015/05/disappointment-and-expectations-go-hand.html
Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Disappointment and Expectations Go Hand in Hand. Expectations and disappointment go hand in hand. It's simple, really. If you don't want to be disappointed, then don't expect anything from anyone. Hey.it's a win win. But, really.it's not. Shouldn't we expect certain things out of certain people? Without expectations we wouldn't be held accountable for anything. Would I pay the bills if I wasn't expected to? Would you call your mom, if you weren't expected to? People let you down.
Over the Backyard Fence: Pattypan Squash Recipe
http://www.karensbackyardfence.com/2015/08/paddy-pan-squash-recipe.html
Wednesday, August 5, 2015. I've made this recipe several times already this summer, using yellow squash and/or paddy pan squash. Truthfully, I didn't even know what paddy pan squash. Until my neighbor gave me a plant and I stuck it in the garden with all the rest of my squash. It's so cute and little (if you keep on top of it) and very tender and tasty. Here's the oh-so-simple recipe:. Slice yellow squash or cut paddy pan squash into wedges. Sprinkle with chopped fresh basil and feta cheese. No matter if...
Over the Backyard Fence: A summer day and some news!
http://www.karensbackyardfence.com/2015/07/a-summer-day-and-some-news.html
Tuesday, July 14, 2015. A summer day and some news! We've had a slow start to summer this year, but from what I've heard from other bloggers and friends around the country, we haven't been alone. There has been more rain than usual and it seems like we just can't get a run of hot summer days. And it's already halfway through July! However, yesterday was a really. Summer day. It was Monday, which is now my favorite day of the week, for this reason:. And Lilly at my feet. Later in the morning, Aunt Kathy c...
Over the Backyard Fence: Around the garden
http://www.karensbackyardfence.com/2015/07/around-garden.html
Sunday, July 19, 2015. I finally took my camera in to get checked out last week and was happy to learn that the problems I was having were caused by a bad battery. Yesterday, I went out and snapped some photos around the yard. A peek into the fairie garden. . . . I planted LOTS of daisies this spring. . . The raised beds were last year's project. We used concrete blocks that the former owners left in the yard. It was easier than hauling them away and they make good beds.. Tessa Here there be musing.
A Million Skies: Published!
http://www.a-million-skies.com/p/getting-published.html
Ever have a dream, then look up one day and realize it has come true? Such is my dream of being published! Not for writing a great novel or an amazing self-help book; not for any culinary skill or great organizational talent. No, just articles about real life and how to rely on God for all the answers. I've now had my third article published and I am thrilled! My first article was published in the women's devotional Journey. And dealt with the subject of hearing God and knowing when He's talking to you.
A Million Skies: We Need A Fresh Vision
http://www.a-million-skies.com/2015/05/we-need-fresh-vision.html
Wednesday, May 6, 2015. We Need A Fresh Vision. Lately, I've had several opportunities to drive down roads I don't normally drive down and see things I don't normally get to see. I'm sure to the people who drive these roads daily, the sights I'm ooohing and ahhhing over, are nothing. But, to me, they are interesting and simple, yet worthy of my time and camera. I'm learning to appreciate myself as a "scenery" photographer, (hey, it's a thing! All it takes is a little imagination and fresh vision. We comp...
A Million Skies: A Parent's Heart
http://www.a-million-skies.com/2015/05/a-parents-heart.html
Thursday, May 14, 2015. One of the things I remember my mom saying to me while growing up was "Just wait till you have kids of your own! And, now.here I am! If I would have known then, what I know now, I might have been a little more considerate of my mom's feeling, her rules, and her expectations and most importantly.her heart. Being a parent is hard. Yes, there is great joy, but there can also be great heartache. There are times of absolute confidence and times of complete and utter confusion. I never ...
A Million Skies: I Was Made for Slow and Steady
http://www.a-million-skies.com/2015/05/i-was-made-for-slow-and-steady.html
Saturday, May 16, 2015. I Was Made for Slow and Steady. This is our dog Banjo. Banjo is meeting a turtle for the first time and thoroughly taking inventory of this new found creature. When I look at these two, face to face, I see such contrast in how they are made. Banjo has to be kept on a leash because as soon as his feet hit the outdoors.he's gone! Full speed ahead, with no cares as to consequences or encounters. He has one thing on his mind and that would be SQUIRRELS! I want to have plans and goals ...
A Million Skies: The White Front Porch - Our Farm Story
http://www.a-million-skies.com/p/farm.html
The White Front Porch - Our Farm Story. Maybe we'll meet up for coffee on the porch one day. Life is funny like that! It just so happened that this was David's grandparent's old home; neither of which were still living there at the time. In fact, David's grandfather had already passed away and his grandmother was living with her daughter about 30 miles away. When the family offered it to us for $100 a month, we said we'd take it! And, that's how we came to call this old place HOME. Honestly, I don't ever...
A Million Skies: Sometimes You Just Need An Adventure!
http://www.a-million-skies.com/2015/05/sometimes-you-just-need-adventure.html
Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Sometimes You Just Need An Adventure! One of the great things I love about homeschooling is the ability to change plans at the last minute and still consider the day a complete success. Today was a perfect example. With the exception of all the days we are running here and there, we normally have a pretty consistent routine, when we happen to have a day at home. So, I told Collin to grab his camera and get in the car.we were going for a ride. First we paid some bills in town, maile...
