Paul studied jazz guitar at Berklee School of Music with William Leavitt and Dave Spadazzi. He regularly performs jazz as a solo artist or with friends. Paul’s main influences for classical guitar are Julian Bream and Andrés Segovia. He regularly performs baroque, classical, Renaissance and Spanish guitar music at events in the San Francisco Bay Area and Napa Valley. His instructors included Phillip Roshegar, George Sakellariou, Bruce French, and David Tannenbaum. He also performed at master classes of Leo Brouwer, Alexander Lagoya, Michael Lorimer, David Russel, Frederick Hand and many others. Chilesotti: Six Lute Pieces of the Renaissance.
Mandolin

Paul learned to play the mandolin when he was asked to play in George Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children. As a graduate student at San Francisco State University. He went on to play mandolin parts with the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet, the Modern Mandolin Quartet, and with Dawn Upshaw and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players doing the same George Crumb piece he started with. Paul performs classical music as well as Italian standards on the mandolin.

All ages and proficiency levels. Paul has been a guitar instructor since 1976, working with all age groups and proficiency levels. Currently he teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory Preparatory and Adult Extension Department as well as The Hamlin School, Mills College and his own private studio. His approach is based on a step by step philosophy with equal regard for finding music which inspires the student and covering the essential basics of music.

For the last three decades, Paul has been an active member of San Francisco’s musical community, playing music in all sorts of situations. Paul has performed as an ensemble player with the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the San Francisco Opera and Ballet Orchestras, the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and many other groups in music ranging from baroque opera to modern chamber music. At the same time, Paul has built a local reputation as a jazz artist of taste and versatility.
