September 28, 2012. The anniversary of her death is coming. And grief is such an inconvenient bastard. Showing up at all the wrong times, staying too long, making everyone at the party uncomfortable. That will ease, I know. It'll get better, easier, less acute with each passing year. It's a paradox, really. Because my life is my own now, in a way it's never been before. And still, my subconscious lingers back there in that room with her and the tubes and machines and IVs. So I'm divided.

November 26, 2012. It's a tough week. Last year at this time, mom was in ICU. Dying, as it turns out. Then, I had a clear-cut mission: show up, and advocate. This year, all the residual pain is kicking in. No time to really feel it last year. Right this minute, I'd rather be sitting at her bedside, listening to the machines beep. Instead of sitting here, wondering which way to go next. I don't know where life will take me,. But I know where I have been. I don't know what life will show me,. There's the y...

bracelets like gravel: The Color Geek, online
http://braceletslikegravel.blogspot.com/2012/08/the-color-geek-online.html
August 11, 2012. The Color Geek, online. OK, I admit it: I'm a color geek! I love figuring out how colors relate, how to mix a certain hue, deciphering whether a beige is orange-y or purple-y. Maybe because my mom bought the big box of 64 crayons? Who knows. But give me some colors and paper, and I'm happy. Turn Flickr into a kaleidoscope! Now that so many of us are walking around with camera/computer/phones in our pockets, there are about a zillion online color tools available. But take it from this 20t...

January 11, 2012. In her own words (a better (auto)biography). Among my mom's papers, I found this artist's statement, which she wrote (I'm guessing) around 2000. Patricia Lee Holland (Pat) McTee was born in Memphis, Tennessee. 1935. Ah, yes. Overlooking the Mississippi River. Childhood years: Whitehaven, Tennessee, in those days, in the country. (Yes, Graceland was already there.) First memories of clay: building dollhouse furniture from mud. And, of course, going barefoot. Squish squish. Married to Cha...

bracelets like gravel: too late to stop now
http://braceletslikegravel.blogspot.com/2011/11/too-late-to-stop-now.html
November 26, 2011. Too late to stop now. Tired So tired. But as the man sang, it's too late to stop now. There is no way of knowing whether this is a sprint, or a marathon. So we keep dancing. I'm exhausted. It's less a burden and more a siege. Us versus time and disease. Eventually, we will lose, but for now we keep going, hoping for periods of quiet and rest in between showers of cannonballs, episodes of pain and confusion and sadness. " Please don't tell me how the story ends. My dear friend T. de...
