PostgreSQL Xlog and ZFS Recordsize - Paul’s Blog
http://www.paulnorman.ca/blog/2014/11/postgresql-xlog-and-zfs-recordsize
A blog without a good name. PostgreSQL Xlog and ZFS Recordsize. After my past testing of ZFS. I thought that there might be more performance gains by switching the xlog ZFS volume recordsize from 128K to 8K. Doing this for the tablespace used for data caused a time decrease of 16% and allowed additional gains from compression, so it seemed logical to test. Using same server as before. I ran a new import, taking care to make it comparable to my previous benchmarking. Posted by Paul Norman.
Testing OpenStreetMap Carto Changes - Paul’s Blog
http://www.paulnorman.ca/blog/2015/03/testing-openstreetmap-carto-changes
A blog without a good name. Testing OpenStreetMap Carto Changes. One of my jobs as a maintainer of the OpenStreetMap Carto (osm-carto) stylesheet is to merge pull requests, which add new features, fix bugs, or otherwise change it. The first step is to find a pull request by someone else that I can review. In this case I’m going to look at #1352. A simple pull request that changes the colour of text labeling kindergartens to be the same as text labeling schools. In order, this tells me. Which is easier to...
Avecado and a Stylesheet - Paul’s Blog
http://www.paulnorman.ca/blog/2015/05/avecado-and-a-stylesheet
A blog without a good name. Avecado and a Stylesheet. Was about about how to install Avecado. And that it met the needs for some OpenStreetMap Carto benchmarking, I didn’t cover how to set it up with a stylesheet. The basic idea is simple, but some adapations need to be made so the benchmark workload matches a real-world workload. Setting up a stylesheet. To start, we need a stylesheet. Since it’s what I’m benchmarking, this is OpenStreetMap Carto. The SQL queries for each layer are defined in. Sed -i -e...
Real Performance Numbers for a Style - Paul’s Blog
http://www.paulnorman.ca/blog/2015/06/real-performance-numbers-for-a-style
A blog without a good name. Real Performance Numbers for a Style. The tile list used for performance testing a stylesheet is critical. It needs to represent a realistic mix of zooms and tile complexity, and be large enough to have reasonable caching behavior. The best source for a tile list is logs from a real rendering server. Logs for the tile.openstreetmap.org rendering servers are available. Both tile accesses and one day’s worth of rendering. For z in `seq 0 19`; do. Echo -n "$z: ". This shows that ...
Running the Redaction Bot - Paul’s Blog
http://www.paulnorman.ca/blog/2015/07/running-the-redaction-bot
A blog without a good name. Running the Redaction Bot. The code is stored on OpenStreetMap Github. And can be cloned with. Git clone https:/ github.com/openstreetmap/openstreetmap-license-change.git. Like the API, the redaction bot is written in Ruby. I’m not a Ruby developer, so what I did probably isn’t best practices. On my machine, I needed to install bundler, and install it locally rather than for the entire system. Gem install - user-install bundler. As gem says, I need to modify my path. Bundle ex...

On Reverse-Engineering a Map Stack | GeoSprocket Community Jive
http://geosprocket.blogspot.com/2014/01/on-reverse-engineering-map-stack.html
On Reverse-Engineering a Map Stack. Saturday, January 11, 2014. I'm going to come right out and say this:. You should probably just use Mapbox. How I came to that conclusion is a bit of a longer story. As a cartographer, I am an unabashed fan of Mapbox. I've been using Tilemill. For years, and I love the fully-realized design of the Mapbox Streets basemaps. One of my Mapbox tilesets to use as a reference for his Census Dotmap. With various client libraries. However, the costs that had begun to concer...
