Paul's Pontifications: March 2015
http://paulspontifications.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Random musings on politics, economics and software. Saturday, March 28, 2015. Google Maps on Android demands I let Google track me. I recently upgraded to Android 5.1 on my Nexus 10. One app I often use is Google Maps. This has a "show my location" button:. When I clicked on this I got the following dialog box:. Notice that I have two options: I either agree to let Google track me, or I cancel the request. There is no "just show my location" option. Hey, Google, stop being evil! Update: 20th April 2015.
Paul's Pontifications: August 2012
http://paulspontifications.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Random musings on politics, economics and software. Monday, August 6, 2012. The Rise of the Me-Burger? Back in February news broke that a university researcher. Had successfully grown bovine muscle tissue in a lab, although a prototype burger made this way would cost an estimated £200,000. I was immediately reminded of an Arthur C. Clarke short story. Could this be about to come true? But then, why not go one step further? Or perhaps a bite of Usain Bolt? Saturday, August 4, 2012. There are lessons to be...
Paul's Pontifications: April 2011
http://paulspontifications.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Random musings on politics, economics and software. Saturday, April 30, 2011. Patent 5,893,120 reduced to mathematical formulae. I have previously argued. The computer science community has tried. To the patent industry, but these explanations have fallen on deaf ears. So I thought I would try a different tack. Google has just been ordered to pay $5M. For infringing patent 5,893,120. Although I believe that the paste-bin will eventually expire). Red Hat is reportedly seeking a declarative judgement that ...
Paul's Pontifications: On Having an E-book Reader
http://paulspontifications.blogspot.com/2013/02/on-having-e-book-reader.html
Random musings on politics, economics and software. Saturday, February 16, 2013. On Having an E-book Reader. I wrote about the reasons why I wasn't getting an e-book reader. I had found that books generally cost more in e-book format than in dead-tree format, and I was nervous about the digital restrictions management (DRM) that e-books came with. These concerns were only increased when I read about Linn Nygaard. However as a result of that fiasco a number. Under which prices have dropped considerably, a...
Paul's Pontifications: TV Resolution Fallacies
http://paulspontifications.blogspot.com/2013/10/tv-resolution-falacies.html
Random musings on politics, economics and software. Friday, October 11, 2013. Every so often discussion of the ever-higher resolution of TV screens generates. To prove that you can't see the improvement unless you sit a few feet from the largest available screen. Most of these articles make the same three mistakes:. Fallacy 1: Normal vision is 20/20 vision. Fallacy 2: Pixel size = Resolution. But this picture demonstrates the problem:. The pixel pitch is close to the height of a brick, leading to the moi...

Friday, December 11, 2009. Not as Painful using Wesabe. If personal financial management is a necessary evil then at least let it be quick and easy. This appears to be the premise of Wesabe.com. A free web-based application providing exactly that. The next step is to ‘tag’ transactions with a description of your choosing, for example eating out, rent, gifts and so on. Friday, March 13, 2009. Android is not a phone. It's an operating system! 160;So why do people compare the iPhone to Android? Because at present there's only one phone running Android (that's been released to the market) and that's the HTC G1. As a cross-over of the abovementioned categories, I've been waiting for a touch-screen phone that still had a full qwerty keyboard. (iPhone touch keyboard is too damn slow; case in point was the type-off I had with you Meller! Whereas Facebook is a good lurking gro...

But let’s go back a step, what is bit.ly? Is a URL shortening service. It transforms a given series of characters comprising a URL into its short-form equivalent. For example, this 41 character link to a third party website (Google Groups) can be shortened to just 13:. Bitly is a relative latecomer to the URL shortening party having only launc...

Spiritual Formation. Discipleship. Christian Living. A Gift for Our Spiritual Formation. December 20, 2017. Almost everyone enjoys gift giving. We enjoy giving gifts, but we really enjoy receiving gifts. When we give a gift we give it with the intention that the gift is used. If we give a gift of chocolate we want the person to eat the chocolate. If we give a gift of clothes we want those clothes to be worn. If we give a gift of toys we want those toys to be played with in imaginative ways. If then you h...

Making Sense of Info. 1/18 and 1/24 Scale. 1/32 and 1/43 Scale. This site is a labour of love for me. I remember the first time I ever saw a Mustang. I was in my early teens and my neighbor had just bought a new Candy Apple Red 65 coupe. It only had a 6 cylinder engine but a 50 year bond started with this car that has been equalled by no other. In 1970 I actually bought a 65 Coupe with a 289 V8 in it. But this site is about my passion for collecting diecast Mustangs. Hopefully this site will help. So the...
