Edible adventures from the centre of the universe. Since we moved to Toronto, Dave and I have been searching for a great sushi restaurant in our neighborhood. There are plenty of kickass, inexpensive sushi joints downtown, like our favourite HoSu Bistro. But we just couldn't find a clear-cut winner in our neck of the woods. That is, until one of Dave's coworkers suggested Asa Sushi at Jane and Bloor ( 18 Jane Street). One of our favourite dishes has been the 12-piece tempura, which is crispy and light an...

Edible adventures from the centre of the universe. There was not much of interest in the car-hole, with the exception of a punch bowl set with a crazy retro etched design, and a floor-to-ceiling vintage lamp. With the benefit of little-old-lady pricing, the 6 glasses from the punch set and the lamp came to a grand total of six dollars ("Is that too much? She asked us). Score! Staropolska fit the bill, but left us with a collective sweet tooth. Luckily, Queen of Tarts. Was just down the block. Peanuts, ca...

Edible adventures from the centre of the universe. Reports of my Demise, Et Cetera. I seemed to have disappeared for a while there, didn't I? Well, it turns out that the Stanley Cup Finals are hella distracting when your favourite team is playing, and following said Finals with a move into a new place leaves no time for blogging. Now that we're all settled into our condo, regularly scheduled programming will recommence. Probably. Risotto requires a lot of attention - it needs to be stirred almost constan...

Edible adventures from the centre of the universe. The chive and noodle dumplings were the first to arrive, followed shortly by the pork and dill (both types of dumplings came boiled). We each combined some soy sauce and red chiles in our dipping bowls and dug in. The chive dumplings were fantastic, with a delicate wrapper and strong chive flavour - I think they were my favorite of the evening. Dave and Paul thoroughly enjoyed the pork dumplings as well. It was an adorable way to end an amazing meal.

Laddy Smid: What's to like? I was surprised to see that Ladislav Smid is a popular guy, even just among the dozen replies I got to my question. He was on more lists than anyone else, getting more points (based on my 5,4,3,2,1 system) than anyone else and averaging a placement of 3rd on everyone's lists. What is it about Smid that we like? His three goals ever in the NHL? The fact that he's been thrown in as a winger this season? Who are your favourite three current Oilers? Who are my top three now? When ...

Edible adventures from the centre of the universe. Review: Cool Hand of a Girl. When you live in a mid-gentrification neighborhood like the Junction, brown paper in storefront windows, "For Rent" signs, or any other indication that a new business is opening are constant sources of nervous anticipation - Will it be something cool, or just another crappy junk shop? A couple of weeks ago, a new cafe opened in the area that definitely fits into the former category, and not by name only. Last year I decided t...

Hot Damn. 8-1! Nicely done, totally the order that they scored. I'd never noticed before that Ales Kotalik looks like Paul McCartney after getting his face caved in by a baseball bat. I'm on twitter. I think my updates are over on the side there -. When I saw the news of Mike Comrie's return to Edmonton, I found every funny tweet regarding the move and re-tweeted it with the tag, #BarfOilers. Okay, I know the money is good. I know that he's probably done a lot of growing up since he left town. I know that on rare occasion, I carry a grudge. I'm looking at you, Jamie Langenbrunner. I wish I could say the prodigal son has returned home to bring prosperity to the Oilers family. But I...
