PBR Book And Film Club: October 2014
http://pbrbookclub.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
As seen in The New Yorker! Tuesday, October 28, 2014. PBR Book Club Makes the New Yorker and Reveals Our November Selection: The Return of Murakami! First off, we're in the damn New Yorker. Today, online at least, thanks to our pal Gary Shteyngart, who recently partied with some of our members in KC and wrote about it in his tour diary. It's a lovely little piece that discusses KC, the Liberty Memorial, and The Day After. And we're happy to be a small part of it. Read it in full here. Appears to be about...
PBR Book And Film Club: First Post of 2015: Let's Get Post-Apocalyptic with Emily St John Mandel's Station Eleven
http://pbrbookclub.blogspot.com/2015/02/first-post-of-2015-lets-get-post.html
As seen in The New Yorker! Tuesday, February 3, 2015. First Post of 2015: Let's Get Post-Apocalyptic with Emily St John Mandel's Station Eleven. Folks, this blog (unlike that silly Larryville Chronicles blog) occasionally exists, even though Wikipedia has STILL. Not seen fit to deem PBR Book Club a real thing worthy of attention. Oh well. What have we been doing, you ask? Well, we read David Mitchell's The Bone Clocks. Discussion (we missed you, Abby! So you can catch up easily. And hopefully you cau...
PBR Book And Film Club: May Selection and Meeting/Skype Announcement: Jeff Jackson's Mira Corpora
http://pbrbookclub.blogspot.com/2015/05/may-selection-and-meetingskype.html
As seen in The New Yorker! Tuesday, May 12, 2015. May Selection and Meeting/Skype Announcement: Jeff Jackson's Mira Corpora. After a few months of mainstream and often-divisive selections, May marks a return to the small presses: Jeff Jackson's Mira Corpora. Published by Two Dollar Radio. We're excited to be interacting with Jackson on Twitter ( @DeathOfLit. And Skyping with him at the next meeting, which is (presumably) Tuesday, May 25 at the Tap. Damn, that's soon! Check out Jackson's website here.
PBR Book And Film Club: March 2014
http://pbrbookclub.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
As seen in The New Yorker! Saturday, March 15, 2014. Karen Zings about the Circle. Is a nice pick for The PBR Book Club. (smile face). 2 It has great one liners that can be zinged. ( smile face) ( like). 3 Example “You’re like part human, part rainbow.” ( Smile face) (followed by 100 likes). The book's main point is not about the politics involved in working in a big corporation. The Circle. Is a cautionary tale about privacy and social media issues. However, the second half of the book gets preachy ...
PBR Book And Film Club: Upcoming Reading
http://pbrbookclub.blogspot.com/2014/11/upcoming-reading.html
As seen in The New Yorker! Wednesday, November 5, 2014. As previously announced November will be Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. Then December we will be taking it super easy with Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane. In January we are getting back to our roots and repeating an author. Back to pretentious reads! We are going for The Bone Clocks. Be thinking of books you want to read. Make notes. We will start deciding soon. If not it'll be 300,000,000. September Selection:...

Beyond the Bookend: The end of a month long celebration of poetry
http://www.beyondthebookend.com/2012/04/end-of-month-long-celebration-of-poetry.html
Thursday, April 26, 2012. The end of a month long celebration of poetry. Dr Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg typing. A poem to send out into the world. Last night I had the pleasure of meeting the charming and brilliant Poet Laureate of Kansas, Dr. Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg. Miss Conception's awesome poetry. Slamming skills won her the grand. Prize - an iPad 2! I'm really glad hat I had the opportunity to work with the programming librarian and the Lawrence Arts Center. Posted by William Ottens. Top Five Friday: 90s ...
Beyond the Bookend: Book Review - God Help the Child
http://www.beyondthebookend.com/2015/05/book-review-god-help-child.html
Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Book Review - God Help the Child. God Help the Child. Spare and unsparing, God Help the Child—the first novel by Toni Morrison to be set in our current moment—weaves a tale about the way the sufferings of childhood can shape, and misshape, the life of the adult. Ever since I took a seminar class on Toni Morrison in college, I’ve been a big fan of her work, and I was excited to pick up God Help the Child. Even though the description says the novel is set in our current moment, I re...

Monday, January 20, 2014. Reading around Twelve Years a Slave. Next Tuesday evening will be the first meeting of the Books and Beer Club. I'm hosting with the co-owner of a local bar, The Cellar Peanut Pub. After a surprisingly great response from their social media following, we selected Solomon Northup's Twelve Years a Slave. For our first title. I just finished reading this past weekend, and now I'm looking forward to discussing the book over craft beers at the pub next week! Twelve Years a Slave.
Beyond the Bookend: Turning 30 on the Edge of a Cliff
http://www.beyondthebookend.com/2015/04/turning-30-on-edge-of-cliff.html
Thursday, April 9, 2015. Turning 30 on the Edge of a Cliff. Final Fling party my senior year at Graceland. I entered my 20’s a sophomore at Graceland University. While in library school, I gained my first job in a library and transitioned to Lawrence. I started at the Lawrence Public Library. After an assigned reference desk observation which I coincidentally completed just before a part time position opened up. That was my foot in the door. Pulling a mannequin from my beetle for a display at LPL. So her...

Saturday, January 17, 2015. Book Review - Landline. This review is also posted on my library's blog, The Reader's Window. Georgie McCool’s husband, Neal, has left her and she’s trying to keep cool. They’ve been together for fifteen years. He’s actually only taken their two girls to spend the holidays in Omaha, but he wasn’t happy with her when they left. That’s because Georgie elected to skip out on the Midwestern Christmas to work on her sitcom. Is she going insane? Posted by William Ottens. Saturday, J...
Beyond the Bookend: Create & Innovate: Post-It Note Pixel Art
http://www.beyondthebookend.com/2015/03/create-innovate-post-it-note-pixel-art.html
Wednesday, March 4, 2015. Create and Innovate: Post-It Note Pixel Art. For our monthly teen crafting program, we invited teens to decorate the library with Post-It Note pixel art. You basically create giant mosaics with the Post-Its! It's helpful to have a few examples or guides, or even provide graph paper so the teens can plan out their art before putting it up. We'll be leaving these up through Teen Tech Week - they're perfect decorations! Posted by William Ottens. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Beyond the Bookend: Getting Shift Done
http://www.beyondthebookend.com/2015/03/getting-shift-done.html
Saturday, March 21, 2015. I began by going through the collection pulling the biographies. One of the previous directors had the cataloging staff start putting biography stickers on new titles, but they didn't go through the collection and put stickers on anything already on the shelf. This made the process a little more complicated than it could have been, because I had to go through each volume on the shelf, especially in the 900's, 800's and 700's. Had a biography label on it. The permanent home for t...
Beyond the Bookend: Put A Bird On It!
http://www.beyondthebookend.com/2015/03/put-bird-on-it.html
Monday, March 23, 2015. Put A Bird On It! My newest display is inspired by my favorite clip from Portlandia. Put A Bird On It! I figured birds would be a nice spring-ish topic, so I pulled pretty much anything that has a bird on the cover. I thought pulling titles from 598 and 636.6 would be a little too easy, so I also pulled anything from fiction and our movies. Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. I also cut out a few silhouettes to make the display pop a little. And here's the inspiration:. Put A Bird On It!
Beyond the Bookend: Poetry & Arts in April at the Library
http://www.beyondthebookend.com/2015/04/poetry-arts-in-april-at-library.html
Thursday, April 2, 2015. Poetry and Arts in April at the Library. If you've read past blog posts, you'll know that I'm a fan of poetry and that April is National Poetry Month. I try to do at least one thing related to poetry at the library, even if it's a simple display featuring titles from our poetry collection. In the past, I've gone all out and used mannequins for Poetry In Your Pocket Day. Featured favorite poets from staff and let a poetry slamming gorilla loose in the library. Our Youth Librarian ...

PBR Book And Film Club
As seen in The New Yorker! Sunday, May 29, 2016. I am not sure if I read the same book that others read. I say this based on the comments I heard. I didn't find anything that shocking or horrifying in this work. There was no big reveal. Overall I thought it was okay. A nice collection of stories that examines society as a whole. I won't be at the meeting, but feel free to tweet me your opinions. Friday, February 26, 2016. PBR Book Club Announces Our Full Spring Slate! March: Zadie Smith's White Teeth.
