Resources available on the Potchefstroom Community Network

Firstly, we don't have any internet connectivity available. It is illegal to sell internet connectivity on a non-commercial community network. You may find somebody on the network that will share their internet connection with you, but we can't provide internet connectivity as a resource. Most of these links are internal to the network, and won't work if you are accessing this site from the internet. Coming Soon: Jabber Server. Jabber Instant Messaging server. You will need a client like Miranda IM.

Connecting to the Potchefstroom Community Network

Connecting to the network. Firstly, you will need some kind of WiFi device (card, adaptor or access point) that is at least 802.11b (but preferably 802.11g) capable. See Equipment. 1 Determine your signal coverage. If your PC has a built-in WiFi adaptor, you can simply view the available networks. All our backbone nodes advertise themselves as www.pcn.za.net/. You may also have a look at our rapidly-evolving coverage map for more information, but note that the map is only a reference. 2 Prepare your PC.

To join the network, you will need some WiFi-capable equipment. There is one important thing to remember: Antenna cable losses with Wi-Fi equipment is high. 5 metres of "average quality" antenna cable may lose 50% of your signal strength. Always aim to connect your WiFi device to your antenna with as short a cable run as possible - eg 1 metre or less, and use good quality cable and connectors. Antennas should be polarised vertically. Ie the elements (teeth / rods) should point up/down, not.
