This part of Mexico is best known (to foreigners, at least) as home to the Mayan civilization which began around 1800 BC and ended with the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Post-conquest, the city of Merida was one of the richest cities in the world, with more millionaires at the turn of the 20. End of history lesson. On to geography.
