What's new ( Page updated: 20/06/16 ). This is another lump of Cotswold stone, weighing 38lbs. The 1st piece of this stone has survived the winter in the garden. It'll be interesting to see a bit of moss growing on it. Hover over an image to see the final piece. Sculpture emerging. Gordon Adams.

How I started in sculpture. When the world was young my family moved to Malta for a few years. With no TV, my mother encouraged us kids to draw, on anything, even on the white-washed kitchen walls if we were good enough. Then, when I was five I won a prize for a horse made out of matchsticks and spuds. I was on my way. Later, back in England, I took Art and Design Foundation at Scarborough Tech then studied art at teacher training college in Newcastle. Direct carving sculpture Gordon Adams.
Carving tips from the workbench of Gordon Adams

Use sandbags to hold stone blocks in place. They allow you to easily rotate or invert the piece, and mould themselves to any irregular shape. The first tool to use is a Point, hit with a lump hammer. This is the quickest way to take out a lot of material. The next tool is a Claw, hit with a dummy mallet. This gives a bit more accuracy, but leaves your surface with deep furrows which must be reduced with a flat chisel. Some of the stages can be greatly speeded up by using power tools. A VERY BIG BUT.

The main tools used in wood carving are gouges, knives, rasps and rifflers. Also, some electric tools are useful for speeding up the "roughing out" stage, especially chainsaws, angle grinders and drills. Are good for small carvings or detail work, but for more heavy-duty work, get a rubber mallet from a camping store. Dont be tempted to buy budget price tools - cheap gouges and rifflers are okay for working on soapstone or plaster, but wood is much. A gouge is a chisel with a curved cutting edge. Round i...
