Pedagogy in Practice: June 2012
http://pedagogypractice.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 21, 2012. This summer, like last summer, I'm brushing up on some professional development reading I've been meaning to get done. Also like last year, I'll be tweeting my thoughts while reading with the hashtag #PiPreading. Unlike last year, I'm choosing only two books and keeping the readings to an average of 30 pages per week so I can realistically get through it all. Consider this your notice to get these books, read along, and share your thoughts on Twitter - if you dare. Won't have muc...
Pedagogy in Practice: Conversation Calendars
http://pedagogypractice.blogspot.com/2009/10/conversation-calendars.html
Wednesday, October 21, 2009. While planning with the district literacy coach this summer, I was introduced to a method of recording participation points and building rapport with students proposed by Cris Tovani in her book Do I Really Have to Teach Reading. 106-110). I can honestly say, without risking hyperbole, that it has completely changed the relationship I have with my students. For one, this increases my contact time with students, something I'm all about. Pedagogy in Practice: A Case for Balancing the High School Literature Curriculum - Part I
http://pedagogypractice.blogspot.com/2015/01/a-case-for-balancing-high-school.html
Sunday, January 18, 2015. A Case for Balancing the High School Literature Curriculum - Part I. I went into college with grandiose plans of taking a separate class each for Chaucer, Milton, and Shakespeare. I was going to be a English major and then become a teacher. Because, after all, "Teaching is just presenting information enthusiastically," my pompous, arrogant, college freshmen self thought. So I plugged along, taking not one but two classes on Shakespeare (fun! Son of the Mob. Out of the Dust.

Friday, February 10, 2012. Episode 6 - Grouping Students, (Not) Leveling Readers. Contains some thoughts I've been tossing around regarding grouping students for reading and responding to Romeo and Juliet. As I mention, I've got a longer post on how I'm teaching the play this year. It's a Bud the Teacher style recording, done on my ride into work. You can hear the mighty roar of my 4-cylinder Corolla in the background. I'll have to play around with microphone placement for next time. Links to this post.

Thursday, July 16, 2009. Three Blogs Notable For Their Relevance to Education and the Language Arts. Moving Forward: Teaching and Learning in a Digital World. The title to this blog is what caught my eye initially. What I enjoyed most about the author's site is that she has created a permanent set of links to important topics in her postings such as tips for using technology in the classroom. This makes her blog a valuable and continuing source of reference for future teaching. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Ben 365/12: About Me
http://ben36512.blogspot.com/p/about-me.html
When I'm not teaching secondary language arts, riding my bike, hiking in the woods, or spending time with my partner, Jennie, and our cat, Bridget, I occasionally take photographs. Sometimes I even take photographs while hiking in the woods. Or spending time with my life partner. The camera was a combined birthday and holiday gift from my parents, Jennie, her parents, her brother Rob, and his partner, Kristen. The goal was to give me an escape route from a pedagogy filled mind. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Jennie and Ben's Excellent Adventure: June 2008
http://bjsouthafrica.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Jennie and Ben's Excellent Adventure. Our journal of experiences in South Africa serving in the Peace Corps. Wednesday, June 11, 2008. It is getting cold here! The mornings and evenings I can't seem to warm up. We bought a space heater just yesterday, an appliance almost every household owns. There are ventilation ducts in the walls of the houses that let in all the cold air. Bathing is now my least favorite activity of the day. Who did a chess/problem solving/lifeskills camp. Back in February I taught t...
