Open House - Cafe Volunteers

Join a friendly team and gain catering experience as well as a qualification, Level 1 Hygiene and Safety for catering. You will be made very welcome! Everyone in PCDT is a volunteer. Open House Cafe is every Saturday at Penicuik Town Hall.from 10am to 1.30pm Duties in the café include setting up tables, buttering bread and scones, making tea and coffee, serving customers drinks, cakes and soup, handling cash, clearing tables, washing and drying crockery and cutlery, and putting everything away.

Penicuik Museum & Papermaking Heritage Centre. Papermaking was started at Valleyfield, Penicuik in 1709 by Sir John Clerk and Agnes Campbell. It passed through various hands until 1779, when it was taken over by Charles Cowan, who ran the mill with his sons, Alexander and Duncan. A papermaking machine was installed in 1821. It eventually became the largest paper-mill in Scotland. Valleyfield closed on 1 August 1975, ending 267 years of papermaking. The section coloured yellow was built after 1958.
