A Message from the Caller. A couple Guiding Star Grange. Callers of my acquaintance found it desirous at one point in their histories to speak to the dancers at their regular dances in this internationally famous hotbed of contra dancing in Greenfield, Massachusetts. David. Graciously allowed me to publish their handouts here. They offer what I consider a fascinating window into the attitudes and issues on the minds of the dancers as well as the callers. As opposed to community, some of us who have been around for awhile have noted the emergence and rise of a consumer mentality in the nature of contra dancing. These two articles embodied for me the core of a conversation on rec.folk-dancing. On this topic. You'll find links to the original discussion in the articles. It first appeared on student.com. Sometime around December 2001 and was last seen on that site in December 2004. Thank you Internet Wayback Machine. My Parents Were Undercover Square Dancers.

Long have been the debates and discussions over this word. No surprise this section has the most articles in it. After a minor assault of teasing - some might reasonably call it a clear case of harrassment - I was cajoled into putting these articles back online. I have attempted to create redirects so those unknown links out there will work again. But most importantly, my friends can now stop teasing (harrassing) me about it. May 17, 2014. Contra-mania - Musaique
http://www.musaique.com/contradance/contra-mania
Hard to believe, but once upon a time we called it. New England Contra Dancing. It spread quickly and changed dramatically in character in many ways. At some point we had to drop the "New England" bit. Other parts of the country, having their own traditional dance and music traditions made contra dance look a bit like kudzu and about as welcome and unavoidable. Dare To Be Square! How to be a good dancer? How to teach someone to be a good dancer? What do we mean by a good dancer? Some thoughts from the incredible Bruce Hamilton, and a summary from another conversation on rec.folk-dancing.
