The Persistent Itch: Moving on
http://persistentitch.blogspot.com/2014/08/moving-on.html
As you can see, I have not blogged here in a long time now. Like any fad, the personal blog has come and gone (plus, .blogspot.com has become a decidedly low-rent address.) Sharing your life online has become simpler—and a lot less verbose—with social networks. Never the less, I have been writing from time to time at other sites. Most recently at Medium. A more modern storytelling/blogging service. I’ve also written several articles for my friend's travel site, The Hostel Life. View my complete profile.

Amazon I N C E P T I O N. Since you are reading this on the Internet, you—like I—probably order stuff from online merchants on a regular basis. As such, we probably appreciate that nearly everything we order comes from another state, and therefore is free of sales tax. (Yes, I know I'm supposed to pay “use tax” on out-of-state purchases, but—really—who does that? It seems to me that too often the big business draws up its own demands, and the local politicians immediately become cheerleaders regardless o...

The Persistent Itch: April 2009
http://persistentitch.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
I say there is enough blame to go around; we ALL contributed to this mess! As the offspring of depression-era, immigrant parents, financial discipline and thriftiness was ground into me from an early age, so I have been aware of—and avoided at all costs—the trap of living beyond ones means. Never the less, I will not even hold myself blameless; I truly believe that all of us in the materialistic west have some culpability in this mess. Likewise, a ban on derivatives (which given the simplest definition&#...

There is no easy Money. The next measure of success is return on investment (ROI) or return on assets; if you already have (or inherited) buildings/facilities/real estate, vehicles, and equipment, you must consider the value of these in any calculation. There is an opportunity cost for these items; could these items could be sold or leased if you were not utilizing them? If so, then this must be determined and subtracted from your profit statement. What is forgotten is the capital tied up in infrastructu...

Meanwhile.Back in Sudan. Saturday, April 29, 2006. The King and I. It is evident that George already enjoys the respect of these men, but yesterday's little show of generosity brought his popularity to a whole new level, and earned him the well-deserved title of 'King George'. Meanwhile.Back in Sudan. Tuesday, May 16, 2006. Yesterday was kind of a sad day for the Palmtree compound. One of our fellow permanent residents decided that it is high time to return to civilization as he knows it*, so he packed his bags and is headed for home. Here's to a safe journey.we're gonna miss that happy chuckle, Sam! There are some lingering arguments as to whether Las Vegas can really be considered civilization ;). Posted by Alexandra @ 12:20 PM. Meanwhile.Back in Sudan. Monday, March 20, 2006. Welcome to the place I call home. It's hardly 5-Star, but as far as Rumbek accommodations go, you can't beat it. I've got my own shower, an internet connection, and a functioning air conditioner - all hot commodities in Southern Sudan. And best of all, I get to share my trailer thin wall space with Kirk! We can converse quite happily without ever leaving our rooms. It just doesn't get any better than this! Posted by Alexandra @ 5:27 PM. Joel's Blog in Sofia.
