Never sleep well on a plane, but managed to catch a few hours of sleep. Need a day to recover and then I'll get back to updating the blog with new photos. Three generations travel to Cusco, Peru and Machu Picchu. Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Inca Trail Trek Begins! We stopped around 11am for lunch which was prepared in an open field along the trails. Squatter toilets were available. Our cooks made warm water available so we could wash our hands and get ready for lunch. It was this day that we walked through jungle which was a nice change of scenery. Beautiful! We even had a few moments of level ground, but such moments were short. And, the climb continued. It was both a happy and a sad day. We got some very long hugs from the children. Now we are getting ready to get some sleep in a bed for the last time for several days. We start our trek tomorrow. From the Sun Gate, we had our first view of Machu Picchu. It was beautiful as the sun was rising over the mountain top. On May 22, the three of us - Tyler, Karen, and Ralene will depart for Cuzco, Peru. We will spend a week volunteering at an orphanage for girls and then will take a 4-day trek on the Inca Trail. Join us as we plan for our trip and as three generations of women take the journey from Southern California to the heights of Machu Picchu.
