Pete at Midway

Sunday, March 30, 2014. Last Post From Midway. I got so busy packing and squaring things away that I didn't even realize I didn't do a post last week, so this week I've got a lot of pictures. I usually like to keep it short and to the point, only because that's what I like to see and read, but there were quite a few things worth taking pictures of the past 2 weeks. Penny is planting some native goosefoot ( Chenopodium oahuense. This is a photo of the one native popolo ( Solanum nelsonii. Same for the Red...

Pete at Midway: May 2013

http://peteatmidway.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 26, 2013. Happy Memorial Day Weekend. This is the view across Eastern Island with the old airplane revetments in the background. The verbesina removal is going well over there. The Brown noddies like to gather on the pier on Eastern. This White tern thought this albatross chick was a little too close for comfort. It was kind of funny that the tern would only snap at the chick when it was looking the other way, not when it was an inch from that big bill. Sunday, May 19, 2013. This nursing monk...

Pete at Midway: News

http://peteatmidway.blogspot.com/2014/03/news.html

Sunday, March 9, 2014. You may be wondering if I'll be continuing my blog. Last time I left Midway, I did start a new blog: http:/ ternisland.blogspot.com/. I've been busy getting ready to move, so I hardly took any photos this week. We have to do our daily seep checks for sick or dead Laysan ducks from botulism, so all my photos on this post were from my 2 hour trip to Eastern Island this morning. I think I'll miss this place. A Black-footed albatross and chick were sitting near Sunset seep. I saw one o...

Pete at Midway: February 2013

http://peteatmidway.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 3, 2013. We had a Super Bowl party today. There weren't many 49er or Ravens fans here and I think there would have been more cheering if it were a Vikings/Patriots match-up. At least it was a decent game. This Black-footed albatross chick has been left alone already. It's a bit on the young side, but it can still be ok. A Laysan albatross parent talks to its chick. The dolphins followed (escorted may be a better word) us back from Eastern Island last week. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Pete at Midway: February 2014

http://peteatmidway.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 23, 2014. I forgot to mention something a few weeks ago, since the news happened the night that I left for Honolulu. We have a new manager at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Dan Clark will be in charge out here, and his wife is able to join him. I worked with Dan and Kathy a couple of years ago when he came out on a work detail. We are happy to have them. Here is a Black-footed albatross chick asking for food. The coral in this area is beautiful and healthy. One of the benefit...

Tern Island Times: Last Day

http://ternisland.blogspot.com/2010/09/last-day.html

Monday, September 20, 2010. Better late than never, right? My last week here was a lot like the others. Pulling weeds, counting birds, finding turtle hatchlings to save, snorkeling and picking up marine debris, fixing tractors, boats, and generators, and all that usual stuff. Maybe they'll let me pull weeds and fix something at my apartment complex in D.C? And I'm sure there will be no shortage of marine debris on the Potomac, I'm also pretty sure that I won't have any snorkel pics to show you. Thanks fo...

Tern Island Times: March 2010

http://ternisland.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 21, 2010. I just noticed I didn't take any pictures of the Kahana or airplane this time. Oh well, you can check my older posts if you want to see them again. Just pretend they are from Saturday. Here's Caitie getting a good picture of a green sea turtle. Here's a reef whitetip shark (I took this picture a couple of weeks ago). It was too close to fit in the frame. You need at least one picture of the birds. Just another Tern Island sunset. Sunday, March 14, 2010. Sunday, March 7, 2010.

News and Views From JEO: November 2012

http://bloggendrauf.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

My perspective on life as I experience it from day 1. Saturday, November 24, 2012. In July we made a trip back to Patrick Creek. To do a little swimming. It was cold but beautiful. Aunt Linda was with us and really enjoyed the deep pool. In the middle fork of the Smith River. Bear enjoyed it too! I really did not venture much past this area. What a wonderful summer day! Saturday, November 24, 2012. Links to this post. Tuesday, November 20, 2012. If a day is hot enough it really does not mater. We got to ...

Tern Island Times: August 2010

http://ternisland.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 29, 2010. 6 turtle hatchlings are patiently waiting in the bucket for sunset so they can get on with their lives. This was a nice turtle release party in the rain. We had somewhere around 45 of them to let go this time. Here's a row of masked boobies on the log on East Island. We still have to pick up trash there though. Here's Sarah pulling out a rope with buoys that was stuck on some coral. The yellow tangs always add some nice color to the pictures. I've been having trouble getting a pi...

Tern Island Times: May 2010

http://ternisland.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 31, 2010. Disappearing Island and Visitors. It was another fun week, as always. We're up to about 1,000 albatross chicks banded, and started the banding of the Bonin petrel chicks also. There's not many of them here though. We're also still banding red-tailed tropicbird chicks and will be for most of the year. Other than that, we've got the usual stuff going on around here. Lots of chicks, lots of eggs of different species, and lots of noise from the sooty terns. An old lobster trap still sit...
