Welcome to my new blog!

Welcome to my new blog! I’m experimenting using a different blogging system and so it will take a while for everything to get back up to speed. I wrote a paper in the latter half of last year that discusses how streams of data look and feel in the real world. We often describe such things by saying messages per second or Megabit per second but this only gives us an understanding of the stream on a per second level. More interesting I think is what happens at a subsecond level. There are also different ty...

Alternative to Vibram Five Fingers

http://peter.membrey.hk/2012/10/27/alternative-to-vibram-five-fingers

Alternative to Vibram Five Fingers. Vibram Five Fingers are some pretty awesome looking shoes. They’re basically gloves for your feet and while there used to be two basic versions (one was light weight and one was light weight with a covering to keep debris out) there are now quite a selection to choose from. Here’s a shot from the Vibram website. When I’ve got them and had a chance to try them out, I’ll post a review / update. I’m looking forward to giving them a try though :).

Tomato Garlic Butter

http://peter.membrey.hk/2012/10/28/tomato-garlic-butter

This delicious food comes courtesy of Mark Sisson’s blog. I’ve had my eye on it for a couple of days and finally had some time (well, I made some time) to get the ingredients and give it a go. I won’t go into the details because it’s all on Mark’s blog but basically I started off with some cherry tomatos and some chopped garlic:. As per instructions, they were suitably mixed and covered with butter:. Then it’s into the blender:. And yes, it does blend - and it smells even better! Can’t wait to try it out!

We often describe such things by saying messages per second or Megabit per second but this only gives us an understanding of the stream on a per second level. More interesting I think is what happens at a subsecond level. For example, if you had a stream that transmits 1,000 messages per second on average, what does that really mean? There are also different types of stream or at least diff...

Chinese

http://peter.membrey.hk/chinese

I’ll soon be adding more resources for learning Chinese. I am only really interested in Mandarin and Cantonese so that’s pretty much what you’ll find here. As I live in Hong Kong and the day to day language is Cantonese, this one will get a lot of practice. However the majority of my family live in mainland China so Cantonese has very little reach there and hence the Mandarin. Anyway, expect updates over the next few weeks as I start getting my learning materials online. :).

CakeDB Released! ←

http://cakedb.org/news/2012/09/24/cakedb-released

Larr; Peter Membrey. CakeDB was released as Open Source today under the GPLv3. License. It’s still very rough, but as it is already usable for my needs, I thought it would be worth pushing the code out there. It’s very much a work in progress with lots of “best practice” issues as I’m learning Erlang and database design as I go along. If it’s useful for you then great! If you have any constructive criticism or pointers, I’d be happy to hear from you :). Next Post →. Larr; Earlier Post. Design by Mark Reid.

About CakeDB! ←

http://cakedb.org/about.html

Larr; Peter Membrey. CakeDB is something of a niche database and to some might not even qualify as a database at all. That’s cool, CakeDB might be of absolutely no use to you whatsoever. If on the other hand, you’ve been working with fast and complex data streams and need to store them for an extended period of time, then CakeDB might be just what you’re looking for! If you’re interested in why I decided to write my own database, check out the Why another database. What does CakeDB actually do?

Why another database? ←

http://cakedb.org/news/2012/06/14/why-another-database

Larr; Peter Membrey. Initially I thought that solving this problem would be pretty easy. After all, my needs were pretty basic and I didn’t need any fancy features. My needs could basically be summed up as:. Access to stored data should be reasonably fast. Access to stored data should be reasonably fast. Time for some Cake. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find anything that would fit all of these needs at once. Some databases could give me most of what I wanted, but none fulfilled all of my requ...

http://cakedb.org/news/2013/01/18/new-version-coming-soon

Larr; Peter Membrey. This site has been a bit quite in the past month or so but there’s been a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes. CakeDB has much improved test coverage, a new Ruby, Java and Erlang driver and an improved internal file format. Larr; Earlier Post. Content by Peter Membrey. Design by Mark Reid.

New license and new issue tracker ←

http://cakedb.org/news/2012/11/20/new-license

Larr; Peter Membrey. New license and new issue tracker. CakeDB was originally released under the GPLv3. License but a number of people who were interested in contributing to CakeDB were concerned that the license was too restrictive. To try to address this and make it easier for people to contribute, I decided to change the license to the BSD 3 clause license. This removes pretty much all restrictions in how CakeDB can be used and hopefully encourage people to contribute back to the project.

Getting started ←

http://cakedb.org/docs/getting-started.html

Larr; Peter Membrey. CakeDB has two main dependencies:. Getting and installing Erlang. Erlang can be downloaded from the Erlang Website. If you’re using Linux, I’d recommend building it from source rather than using your distributions package manager as they tend to do weird things with it. Wget http:/ www.erlang.org/download/otp src R16B02.tar.gz tar -zxvf otp src R16B02.tar.gz cd. Otp src R16B02 ./configure - prefix =. Opt/otpr16b02 make make install. If you see any warnings from the.
