Peter Barnfield is self taught since his graphic arts training was technical in nature rather than creative. He favours graphite pencil, coloured pencil, pen and ink, watercolour and acrylics, and most of the humorous pictures are in mixed media. All paper based mixed media works have for some years now been on the cotton rag 640 gram Fabriano Artistico HP Traditional or Extra White. The original tiny sketch of Betony Farm Gate and finished 31 x 44 cm coloured pencil picture.

Steam Pencil cards are real photographs taken from the original artwork and mounted on 7 x 5 inch white cards folding open to a blank inside. They come with good quality envelopes, are individually packed in transparent wallets and are handmade in small quantities. There have been over 200 different images published in 6 Steam Pencil series since 1995 (H, NG, W, S, A and M). Although many of these cards are no longer available, those still in print are stocked by the Titfield Thunderbolt Bookshop.
