Classical Australian Red Cedar. HISTORY OF CABINETMAKING IN NSW. Shellac, the basis of French Polish, is totally organic and edible. It is a resin secreted by the female Lac Beetle which inhabits India and Thailand. The beetle feeds on the sap of the tree and leaves the resinous deposit which is then harvested and refined. Pills, confectionary and peanuts are coated with a glaze made from shellac. It has many other uses. Early 78RPM records were made from it before the invention of vinyl.
