Coins with an edge. Will the Jackie Kennedy first spouse coin be popular? Is Jackie Kennedy three times as popular as Eleanor Roosevelt? The US mint is counting on it. For the now anemic first spouse gold coin series, mintages are limited to 10,000 per coin (split between the proof and uncirculated). For most of the first spouses, the demand has been nowhere near 10,000. In 2015, the series will be headlined by Jackie Kennedy. For this coin, the limit will be tripled to 30,000. What do you think?

Today I read an interesting article about a coin collection that was allegedly stolen and then sold to the Las Vegas Gold and Silver Pawn Shop that is featured on the History Channel's show, Pawn Stars (which admittedly I have watched once or twice). The coins were apparently graded and slabbed. The melting of any historic coin brings a tear to my eye. But here, I smell a rat. And so, why were the coins so quickly melted? Links to this post.

Coins with an edge. Trimes (a.k.a. three cent pieces). The three cent piece, or trime. Composition of the silver three cent piece. The original silver three cent piece (known as Variety 1) was 75% silver and 25% copper. In 1854, it was changed to 90% silver and 10% copper, which is the same composition as other silver coins. These are Variety 2 three cent pieces. Variety two added olive sprigs around the Roman numeral III on the reverse along with three lines outlining the star on the obverse.

In the Barber series, Liberty took on the appearance of a generic Roman emperor. The designs were never popular.
